BMW uses four brake systems, and each one needs different brake pads, brake discs and repair steps. You can identify your BMW brake type by the colour of the brake caliper.
Black or silver floating calipers. Fitted to most BMW 1, 2, 3 and 5 Series and X1 to X5 models. Lowest cost for brake pad and disc replacement.
Blue or red calipers with the M logo and fixed multi-piston front calipers. Larger brake discs and pads made for that caliper.
Fitted to BMW M models such as the M3, M4, M5, X5 M and X6 M. Large fixed calipers with two-piece compound brake discs.
Gold calipers with carbon-ceramic brake discs. Longer disc life and less brake fade, but higher parts cost. Discs are checked by weight loss, not thickness.

Our BMW repair workshop in Dubai repairs the complete BMW brake system – front brakes, rear brakes, parking brake, brake hydraulics and brake electronics. All work is done to BMW procedure using BMW ISTA.
We replace BMW front brake pads with genuine BMW or OE-supplier pads (Textar, Pagid, ATE) to suit your brake type. Slide pins and pad contact points are cleaned and greased, a new wear sensor is fitted when needed, and the pads are bedded in on a road test.
Brake discs are measured with a micrometer against the minimum thickness and checked for run-out. Discs are skimmed only if they stay above minimum thickness. Thin, lipped or cracked discs are replaced in pairs, and the hub faces are cleaned so new discs run true.
On BMWs with an electronic parking brake, the rear calipers are put into workshop mode with ISTA before the pistons are pushed back. This prevents damage to the caliper spindle and parking brake motor. The parking brake is recalibrated after the new pads are fitted.
Most BMWs from around 2010 have a parking brake motor on each rear caliper. Some earlier models, such as the E70 X5, use one motor with cables and drum shoes inside the rear discs. We repair parking brake malfunction warnings, faulty parking brake motors, seized calipers, cables and shoes.
BMW recommends a brake fluid change every two years with DOT 4 Low Viscosity (LV) fluid, which the ABS/DSC unit is designed for. We test the fluid for moisture, flush all four brakes and run the ISTA DSC bleed on models that need it.
A sticking caliper causes the car to pull to one side and uneven pad wear. We repair or replace BMW brake calipers and replace cracked brake hoses and corroded brake lines.
A sinking brake pedal usually points to the master cylinder, and a hard pedal to the vacuum pump or brake booster. A leaking BMW vacuum pump also causes an oil leak, which our BMW engine repair team fixes in the same visit.
When the ABS, DSC and brake lights come on together, the cause is usually a wheel speed sensor, sensor ring or wiring fault. We test each wheel speed sensor in ISTA and only repair or replace the ABS/DSC module when the test confirms it, then code it to the car.
From the G05 X5 onwards, BMW combines the brake booster, brake pressure control and DSC in one unit (DSCi). Diagnosis, bleeding and programming of this system need ISTA, which we have in-house.
BMW fits one brake wear sensor per axle, and it cannot be reused once triggered. After fitting a new sensor we reset the front and rear brake service (CBS) counters separately so iDrive shows the correct distance.
These are the most common BMW brake warning lights and brake problems, what they usually mean, and how soon your BMW needs a brake inspection.
The brake pads have reached the wear sensor and need replacing.

BMW sends more braking force to the rear axle than older cars. DSC and xDrive also use the rear brakes to control traction, and the electronic parking brake clamps the rear pads each time you park. On the X5, X6 and X7, rear brake pads often need replacing first.
On the BMW i4, iX, i7 and plug-in hybrids, regenerative braking does most of the stopping. The brake discs are used less, so they rust and the pads glaze, causing brake noise and weak braking.
On newer BMWs with DSCi, the ABS does not pulse the brake pedal. A pulsing pedal during normal braking on these cars almost always means uneven brake discs.
Sand gets into slide pins and causes uneven pad wear. BMWs parked through summer get rust on the brake discs. Low-dust aftermarket pads keep wheels cleaner but can reduce braking performance, so we advise on the right pad for your BMW.
Worn tyres and shock absorbers also increase stopping distance, so we check them in every brake inspection. See our car suspension repair, auto tyre services and signs of bad shock absorbers.
Every BMW brake pad replacement and BMW brake repair at Carzilla includes the following checks at no extra cost.
BMW brake pad replacement cost in Dubai depends on the model, brake type and parts chosen. The prices below are indicative and include parts and labour. You get an exact written quote after a free brake inspection.

Parts: genuine BMW parts or OE-supplier parts at a lower price. We do not fit unbranded brake pads.
Pads or discs: brake discs are replaced only when measurements show they need it.

At Carzilla, BMW front brake pad replacement costs around AED 450 to 1,100 and rear brake pad replacement around AED 400 to 950. The price depends on the model, brake type and parts chosen. You get an exact written quote after a free brake inspection.
BMW sends more braking force to the rear axle, DSC and xDrive use the rear brakes to control traction, and the electronic parking brake clamps the rear pads when you park. On heavy models such as the X5 and X7, rear brake pads often wear first.
No. We measure the brake discs and check run-out. If the discs are above minimum thickness and in good condition, only the brake pads are replaced. Discs are replaced when they are thin, lipped, cracked or causing vibration.
Usually the old brake wear sensor was reused or the brake service counter was not reset. BMW wear sensors cannot be reused once triggered, and the front and rear CBS counters must be reset with a tool such as ISTA.
Yes. The electronic parking brake is put into workshop mode with ISTA before the caliper pistons are pushed back, then recalibrated after the new pads are fitted. This protects the parking brake motor and caliper.
BMW recommends a brake fluid change every two years using DOT 4 Low Viscosity fluid. Old brake fluid absorbs moisture, which lowers its boiling point and can cause a soft brake pedal in hot UAE conditions.
Normal braking usually still works, but ABS and stability control may be off, so the car can skid under hard braking. Drive carefully and book a BMW brake diagnosis. If the red brake light is on or the pedal feels soft, do not drive the car.
Yes. On the BMW i4, iX, i7 and plug-in hybrids, regenerative braking means the brake discs are used less, so they rust and the pads glaze. They still need brake inspections and a brake fluid change every two years.
BMW brake pad replacement on one axle usually takes one to two hours. Pads and discs on both axles can be done the same day. Caliper, parking brake or ABS/DSC repairs may take longer if parts need ordering.
Yes. We repair BMW M Carbon ceramic, M Compound and M Sport brakes. Carbon ceramic brake discs are checked by condition and weight loss rather than thickness, are never skimmed, and need the correct brake pads.
