What Is Salik and How Does It Work?
Salik — Arabic for "open" or "clear" — is Dubai's official electronic road toll system, operated by Salik Company PJSC (listed on the Dubai Financial Market since 2022) under the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Launched on 1 July 2007 with two gates, the network has since grown to 10 active toll gates across the city's major corridors as of 2026.
The system uses RFID technology: a small sticker tag on your windshield is read by overhead sensors as you pass a gate, and the toll is automatically deducted from your prepaid account — no stopping, no barriers, no cash. Salik also uses ANPR cameras as a backup to read licence plates if a tag is missing or unreadable.
Every vehicle on Dubai's tolled roads must have an active Salik tag linked to a prepaid account. Driving through a gate without a tag or with insufficient balance results in a fine. Type the mobile number registered to your Salik account (e.g. 05X XXX XXXX). This must be the exact number used at registration.
Enter your vehicle plate number
Provide your plate number and emirate. The system cross-references your mobile with the linked vehicle.
Receive and enter the OTP
A one-time code is sent to your mobile. Enter it to instantly view your current balance and recent trips.
Via SMS: If your mobile is registered to your Salik account, simply text BAL to 5959 — no account number needed. The system identifies you by your registered number automatically and replies with your current balance.
How to Check Salik Balance Without an Account Number
Forgotten your account number? No problem — Salik offers multiple ways to check your balance without it. Your account number is only one of several identifiers the system accepts.
Use your plate number + registered mobile
The most common no-login method. Go to salik.ae → "Check Balance Without Login", enter your plate number, select your emirate, and verify via OTP to your registered mobile. No account number required at any step.
Use your Salik tag number
The tag number printed on your windshield sticker can be used as an alternative identifier on salik.ae. See the tag number method below.
SMS from your registered number
Text BAL to 5959 from your registered mobile. The system identifies your account automatically — no account number or PIN needed in the message.
Call 800-72545 and use your plate number
The 24/7 helpline agent can look up your account by plate number after verifying your identity. Useful if you have no digital access.
Need to recover your account number? Log in to salik.ae with your registered mobile and plate number — your account number is displayed in the top-right corner of the dashboard once verified. It also appears on your physical Salik tag sticker and in the welcome email you received at registration.
Check Salik Balance with Tag Number
Your Salik tag number is printed on the RFID sticker affixed to the inside of your windshield. It is a unique identifier linked directly to your Salik account and can be used to check your balance on the official website.
Locate your tag number
Look at the Salik sticker on the inside of your windshield (usually top-centre or top-right). The tag number is printed on the sticker itself. It also appears in your original welcome email and on your Salik account dashboard.
Go to salik.ae and log in
On the login screen, look for the option to use your tag number as your identifier instead of account number and PIN.
Enter the tag number
Input the full tag number exactly as printed. It is typically a long numeric string unique to your sticker.
Verify and view your balance
Complete identity verification via your registered mobile OTP. Your balance, trip history, and account status will be displayed.
Tag number vs account number: These are different. Your account number is a shorter reference assigned when you registered. Your tag number is the longer number physically printed on the RFID sticker. Both link to the same account — but if your tag is lost, stolen, or damaged, deactivate it immediately via salik.ae or by calling 800-72545 to prevent unauthorised toll charges.

How to Recharge Your Salik Account
Recharging your Salik balance is quick and free via most channels. The minimum recharge is AED 50, in multiples of AED 50, up to AED 50,000 per transaction. No VAT applies to Salik recharges or toll fees.

Credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and bank transfers are all accepted on salik.ae and the Smart Salik app. To recharge via SMS without logging in, send RECHARGE [account] [PIN] [amount] to 5959.

From 31 January 2025, Salik replaced its flat AED 4 rate with a time-based variable system across all gates. Rates are verified against the official Salik pricing announcement and dubai.ae.

Toll-Free Alternative Routes
Dubai has several major highways with no Salik gates — useful if you want to avoid tolls entirely:
Al Khail Road (E44)
Runs parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road — no Salik gates, saving AED 8–16 on a cross-city trip. May add travel time during peak hours.
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311)
Connects northern and southern Dubai without any Salik gates. A practical alternative for longer cross-city routes.
Emirates Road (E611)
Currently toll-free and runs along Dubai's outer edge. Salik is evaluating additional gates on this route — check the RTA S'hail app for updates before long journeys.

Salik Fines, Grace Period & Violations

Grace Period: If you pass a gate with insufficient balance, you have 5 working days from the trip date to recharge your account. Recharge within that window and no fine is issued. Miss it and the AED 50/day fine kicks in.

Unpaid violations block vehicle registration renewal. Fines must be cleared before your vehicle can be re-registered or transferred to a new owner. Check outstanding violations proactively on salik.ae — there is no automatic notification system. How to Pay Salik Fines
Fines can be paid through salik.ae, the RTA website or app, RTA Customer Happiness Centres, or Tasjeel vehicle licensing stations. You can also dispute charges through the Salik portal if you believe a toll was incorrectly applied. People of Determination Exemption
Residents holding a valid People of Determination ID (issued by Ministry of Community Empowerment) or a Sanad card (issued by Community Development Authority) can apply for a full Salik fee exemption. Apply through salik.ae under Salik Services → People of Determination Exemptions, or call 800-72545 for assistance.
Getting, Activating and Managing Your Salik Tag
The Salik tag is a passive RFID sticker for the inside of your windshield. It must be activated before your first toll gate crossing. Tag details are verified from the official Salik FAQ.
Where to Get a Salik Tag
In-person — AED 100: Any Emarat, EPPCO/ENOC, or ADNOC petrol station (selected branches). Includes AED 50 for the tag + AED 50 prepaid balance. You can also buy via the Careem App.
Online — AED 120: Order at salik.ae or through the Smart Salik App. Includes AED 50 tag + AED 50 balance + AED 20 delivery. Tags purchased online are activated automatically once payment is processed — no separate activation step needed. Check delivery coverage on salik.ae as some areas fall outside the delivery zone.
How to Activate Your Tag (In-Person Purchase)
Activate via salik.ae (Salik Services → Activate Salik Card), the RTA Dubai app, or by calling 800-72545. You'll need: your tag card number (printed on the tag), your mobile number, and your Traffic File Number (on your vehicle registration card). Activation is instant once details are submitted and confirmed by OTP. Note: activation is not available through the Smart Salik mobile app — use the website.
One tag per vehicle
Tags are tied to a specific Traffic File Number and cannot be transferred between vehicles.
Buying a used car
You have 10 working days from your first toll gate crossing to purchase, activate, and affix a new tag. Remove the previous owner's tag immediately. Always run a free VIN check at Carzilla before buying any used vehicle to confirm there are no inherited Salik arrears or traffic violations.
Selling a vehicle
Remove and discard the Salik tag from the sold vehicle and remove the vehicle from your account immediately via salik.ae — you remain responsible for any tolls incurred until you do.
Lost or stolen tag
Deactivate immediately through salik.ae or by calling 800-72545. You are liable for all tolls incurred by a lost tag until deactivation is confirmed.
Balance expiry
Salik balance is valid for up to 5 years from last account activity (recharge or trip). After that it is forfeited. Balances are non-refundable and non-transferable between accounts.
Rental cars
All Dubai rental vehicles come with an active Salik tag. Toll charges are billed to your rental account — confirm terms before driving. If you own your vehicle, keep it in shape for Dubai's highways: suspension, tyres, and steering should all be checked regularly.
GCC vehicles
RFID tags from other GCC countries do not work in Dubai's Salik system. If driving a GCC-registered vehicle in Dubai, you must purchase a UAE Salik tag.

Enable push notifications
The Smart Salik app sends low-balance alerts and violation notices. SMS service is a value-added feature — you are responsible for your account regardless, so don't rely on SMS alone.
Proactively check fine history
Salik does not automatically notify you of fines. Log in to salik.ae or the RTA app at least monthly to check for outstanding violations before they compound or block your registration renewal.
