Dubai does not just have hot air. It has a combination of conditions that almost no engine is calibrated around: 45–50°C ambient temperatures for four to five months, road surfaces that reach 70°C and radiate heat straight back into the underbody, airborne silica dust that packs into every cooling core, humidity near the coast that pushes 80%, and driving patterns full of short trips, idling in traffic and long periods where a car sits parked and unused.
Under the bonnet, that adds up fast. On a European summer day an engine bay might stabilise around 80–90°C. In Dubai the same bay sits at 110–120°C in traffic, and after shutdown it climbs higher still, because the airflow stops but the block, manifolds and turbochargers keep radiating heat into everything around them. That post-shutdown spike — heat soak — is what actually kills most components. The engine is not being destroyed while you drive it. It is being cooked in the ten minutes after you park it, thousands of times over.

How Dubai Heat Breaks Down Engine Oil
Engine oil is the first casualty because it is the only component asked to do its job at the peak temperature. Oil that runs at 100–110°C in normal conditions can sit at 130–140°C in Dubai traffic, and higher in a turbocharged engine after a hard run.
Two things happen. The base oil oxidises, thickening the fluid and forming acids and varnish. And the additive package — anti-wear ZDDP, detergents, viscosity index improvers — depletes far faster than the drain interval assumes. A 15,000 km or 12-month interval written in Munich is not a Dubai interval. By the time that oil comes out here it has often lost its viscosity grade entirely.
The damage shows up as sludge in the pickup screen and oil galleries, varnish on variable valve timing solenoids and chain tensioners, accelerated bearing and cam wear, and turbo bearing coking on cars that are shut off immediately after a fast drive. Once oil bakes onto a turbo’s oil feed line, the restriction is permanent and the turbo eventually fails.
The fix is not complicated but it has to be done properly: a full drain with the correct manufacturer specification oil (not a generic “synthetic 5W-40”), a genuine filter, and a shortened interval — typically 5,000–7,500 km for most luxury engines in the UAE. Where sludge is already present, the sump and pickup need to come off; flushing chemicals alone do not clear a blocked screen. Cooling System Failure: The Main Cause of Engine Damage in Dubai
Most overheating in Dubai is not caused by a failed part. It is caused by a cooling stack that can no longer reject heat.
The radiator, AC condenser, charge-air cooler and oil coolers sit stacked together at the front of the car. Fine desert sand packs into those fins from the back, where nobody looks, and forms an insulating layer. From the front the radiator looks clean. In practice the car has lost 20–30% of its cooling capacity, and the first complaint is usually weak air conditioning at idle rather than a temperature gauge moving — the condenser is starved first. A large number of the cars that arrive for car AC repair in summer actually have a cooling airflow problem, not a refrigerant problem.
Heat also attacks the cooling system’s weakest material: plastic. Coolant crossover pipes, thermostat housings, expansion tanks and radiator end tanks are glass-filled nylon, and repeated thermal cycling makes them brittle. They rarely weep. They split, and the coolant loss is sudden. Rubber hoses harden and lose clamping compression, water pump seals dry out, and coolant itself degrades — the corrosion inhibitors in an old or incorrectly mixed coolant drop out of solution and stop protecting aluminium heads and blocks.
Correct repair means pressure-testing the system cold and hot, checking fan operation and fan clutch or module function, cleaning the cooling stack from the engine side rather than blasting it from the front, and refilling with the exact coolant chemistry the manufacturer specifies. Heat Damage to Rubber, Plastic and Gaskets
Every seal in the engine bay is a polymer with a plasticiser in it, and heat drives that plasticiser out. The material shrinks, hardens, and stops sealing.
This is why oil leaks in the UAE follow such a predictable pattern: valve cover gaskets, camshaft and crankshaft seals, oil cooler seals, turbo oil return gaskets, and the vacuum and PCV hoses that go rigid and crack at the fittings. Serpentine belts glaze and crack, engine mounts collapse — hydraulic mounts in particular lose their fluid and start transmitting a vibration owners often mistake for a gearbox fault — and intake manifold gaskets shrink enough to pull air unmetered.
A point most workshops skip: before resealing any leak, crankcase pressure must be checked. A blocked or failed PCV system pressurises the crankcase and pushes oil past seals that are perfectly serviceable. Replace the gasket without fixing the pressure and the leak returns within months. That single check is the difference between a repair that holds and one that comes back.
What Heat Does to Batteries and Electronics
Battery life in Dubai is 24–36 months, not the five years a European owner expects. Heat accelerates grid corrosion and electrolyte loss, and an AGM battery that reads 12.4V at rest can still collapse under crank load. Weak voltage then produces symptoms that look mechanical: erratic shifting, warning lights, modules dropping offline, and no-start conditions. Voltage should always be tested before any complex diagnosis.
Wiring is affected too. Loom insulation hardens and cracks where it passes near manifolds and turbos, ground points corrode in coastal humidity, and sensors close to the exhaust — oxygen sensors, crank and cam position sensors — fail with heat-soak symptoms that appear only when the car is hot and disappear when it cools. Intermittent faults in this climate are almost always thermal.
How Heat Affects Fuel, Combustion and the Gearbox
Fuel vapourises more readily at high temperature, which loads the evaporative emissions system and its purge valve, and often triggers EVAP fault codes after a hot soak. Direct injection engines suffer separately: high underbonnet temperatures bake oil vapour from the PCV system onto the back of intake valves, and that carbon build-up causes misfires, rough idle and lost power. It has to be removed mechanically — walnut blasting — because no fuel additive reaches an intake valve on a direct injection engine.
Automatic transmission fluid degrades under the same thermal stress as engine oil, and because most gearbox coolers sit inside or beside the radiator, a compromised cooling stack raises fluid temperature as well. Overheated ATF causes flare shifts, shudder and eventual clutch pack damage — which is why heat-related gearbox repair work rises through the summer.
How to Prevent Heat Damage to Your Engine in Dubai
Prevention here is mostly about shortening intervals and respecting the climate rather than the manual.
Shorten oil changes to 5,000–7,500 km and use the correct specification. Have the cooling stack cleaned from behind at least annually before summer, and pressure-test the system rather than just looking at the level. Replace coolant on time and never mix chemistries. Expect to replace the battery on a two to three year cycle, and test it before summer, not after it fails. Let a turbocharged car idle for 30–60 seconds before shutdown after a hard drive so the oil is not left sitting in a red-hot bearing housing. Avoid the pattern of very short trips, which never brings the oil hot enough to boil off moisture and fuel dilution, and start a stored car properly and drive it rather than idling it.
A pre-summer inspection catches almost all of this while it is still cheap. A proper car inspection in Dubai should include a cooling system pressure test, fan operation check, battery load test, belt and hose condition, oil condition and leak survey. Cars that fail an RTA vehicle test in summer usually fail on faults that were visible months earlier.

Dubai heat does not usually break an engine in one event. It ages every fluid, seal, hose and connector faster than the service schedule assumes, and failure arrives when the maintenance interval and the climate finally disagree by too much. Adjust the intervals to the climate and the engine lasts as long as it should.
