Mercedes C215 CL-Class (1999–2006)

Every C215 left the factory with ABC hydraulic suspension and the 722.6 5G-Tronic gearbox. What changes from car to car is the engine.

CL500: M113 5.0 V8 with twin-spark ignition. The most common C215 in Dubai and the easiest to keep running.
CL600 (1999–2002): M137 5.8 naturally aspirated V12.
CL600 (2003–2006): M275 5.5 V12 biturbo, with its own charge-air cooling circuit and coil packs.
CL55 AMG: M113 5.4 V8, then the supercharged M113K from 2003, paired with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 5-speed.
CL65 AMG: M275 AMG 6.0 V12 biturbo from 2004, the most torque of any C215.

Mercedes C216 CL-Class (2006–2014)

Rear-wheel-drive C216 cars use ABC hydraulic suspension, the 4MATIC cars use AIRMATIC air suspension, and the gearbox depends on the engine.

CL500 / CL550: M273 5.5 V8 with the 722.9 7G-Tronic and ABC suspension (2006–2010).
CL500 / CL550 4MATIC: M273 V8, then the M278 4.7 V8 biturbo from 2011, with 7G-Tronic and AIRMATIC.
CL600: M275 5.5 V12 biturbo with the 722.6 5-speed and ABC.
CL63 AMG (2007–2010): M156 6.2 V8 with AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-Tronic and ABC.
CL63 AMG (2011–2014): M157 5.5 V8 biturbo with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed wet-clutch gearbox and ABC.

Common ABC faults and symptoms

Clunk over speed bumps: Pressure accumulators have lost their nitrogen charge. Usually the first and cheapest ABC repair.
Car sinks overnight: A front or rear valve block is leaking internally and the car rises slowly on start-up.
One corner sits low: An ABC strut is leaking past its plunger seal, often with wet fluid on the strut body.
Whine from the engine bay: Tandem pump wear. The same pump drives the power steering, as on the W220 and W221 S-Class.
Fluid under the front of the car: Pressure or return hoses near the pump have split from engine heat.

Common faults by CL-Class engine

M113 and M113K V8 (CL500 C215, CL55 AMG): Cam cover and oil cooler leaks, harmonic balancer wear and twin-spark misfires. The CL55 AMG loses power in summer when its intercooler pump fails.
M273 V8 (CL500 and CL550 C216): Timing idler gear wear on early engines, plus cracked thermostat housings. The same engine is used in the E-Class, CLS-Class and GL-Class.
M156 and M157 AMG V8 (CL63 AMG): Head bolt failure and camshaft wear on the 2007–2010 M156, shared with the C63 AMG. Turbo oil and coolant lines on the M157 biturbo.
M275 V12 biturbo (CL600, CL65 AMG): Coil pack failure causing misfires under load, as on the V12 Maybach, plus charge-air cooler pumps.

722.6 5G-Tronic (C215 and all V12 cars): Fluid wicks through the 13-pin connector into the wiring, causing harsh shifts and limp mode in second or third gear.
722.9 7G-Tronic (C216 V8, CL63 M156): Conductor plate and speed sensor failure causes sudden limp mode. A new plate must be coded online.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT (CL63 AMG from 2011): Judder when pulling away or slipping under load points to wet clutch wear or old fluid.

The same applies to a 7G-Tronic conductor plate caught at the first limp mode, or an M273 idler gear caught at the first fault code rather than after the chain jumps. A car inspection is the cheapest way to find problems early.
