A coolant leak is one of the most common reasons a Range Rover Vogue ends up on a workshop lift in Dubai, and it is also one of the most commonly mishandled. Many cars come in after a top-up, a bottle of sealant and a “we couldn’t find anything” verdict from a general garage, then return three weeks later with the same low coolant warning. The reason is almost always the same: the leak was never traced to a specific component, and the condition that caused it was never addressed.
This guide explains where Vogue coolant leaks actually start, why the UAE climate accelerates them, how a proper diagnosis and repair should be carried out, and how to judge a Range Rover workshop in Dubai before you hand over the keys.
Signs of a Coolant Leak on a Range Rover Vogue
The classic symptom is a sweet smell after parking, but on a modern Vogue the warning usually arrives on the dash before you ever see a puddle. Watch for a low coolant message, a heater that blows cool at idle, white or coloured crust around a hose joint, or an expansion tank that keeps needing topping up between services.
Two symptoms are worth calling out because they are misread constantly in Dubai. The first is the clear water dripping under the car after the air conditioning has been running — that is normal AC condensate, not coolant, and no repair is needed. Coolant is coloured, feels slightly slippery and leaves a residue when it dries. The second is a Restricted Performance message with a completely normal temperature gauge. On the L460 P400 with the 3.0 Ingenium six-cylinder, the low-temperature charge-air circuit has its own tank and its own electric pump, and losing coolant from that circuit derates the engine without moving the main gauge at all.
Also note that on many Vogue models the temperature gauge is heavily damped and will sit dead centre until the situation is already serious. Never treat a steady gauge as proof that the cooling system is healthy.
Where Range Rover Vogue Coolant Leaks Start
Coolant leaks are engine-specific, and this is where most general garages lose time. Knowing which engine is in the car narrows the search to a handful of known failure points before the bonnet is even opened, which is exactly how a specialist Range Rover engine repair team approaches the job.
5.0 Supercharged V8 (AJ133)
The single most important leak point on this engine is the coolant crossover pipe that runs underneath the supercharger. It is buried, it fails with age and heat, and it cannot be reached without removing the supercharger. Thermostat housings, the water pump and the plastic tee connections at the front of the engine also fail. Because the supercharger has to come off anyway, a competent workshop will inspect the supercharger nose cone and bearings, and replace the surrounding hoses and gaskets in the same visit rather than charging that labour twice.
3.0 TDV6 / SDV6 Diesel (306DT)
On the diesel V6 the usual sources are the EGR cooler, the oil-to-coolant heat exchanger, the plastic thermostat housing and the coolant pipes routed in the valley of the engine. An EGR cooler that has started to leak internally will consume coolant with no external drip at all, so a car that is losing level with a dry engine bay needs a pressure test and an exhaust check, not another top-up.
4.4 SDV8 Diesel (448DT)
Turbo coolant feed and return lines, the EGR system and the front cover area are the usual suspects. These engines are tightly packaged, so a small weep at the back of the engine can travel a long way before it becomes visible.
3.0 Ingenium Six-Cylinder MHEV and Plug-In Hybrids
Newer Vogues run more than one coolant circuit. The main engine circuit, the low-temperature charge-air circuit and, on P400e and P510e models, the high-voltage battery cooling loop are separate systems with separate pumps and separate expansion tanks. Topping up the wrong tank achieves nothing, and any workshop touching a hybrid cooling circuit must be able to isolate the high-voltage system safely.
Older L322 Models
On earlier Vogues, age is the deciding factor. Plastic thermostat housings, expansion tanks, pipe elbows and the pressure cap itself become brittle after a decade of UAE heat, and a leak in one usually means the rest are close behind.
Why Coolant Leaks Are So Common on Range Rovers in Dubai
Cooling systems in this region do not fail from mileage — they fail from thermal cycling. Every time the engine bay swings from 45°C ambient to full operating temperature and back, plastic housings, rubber O-rings and bonded joints expand and contract. Over a few Dubai summers those parts harden, shrink and lose their seal, which is why a Vogue with modest mileage can still develop leaks at exactly the same points as a high-mileage car.
Airflow is the second factor. The Vogue’s cooling stack — condenser, main radiator, low-temperature radiator, oil coolers — packs with fine sand from behind, where it cannot be seen from the front. A blocked stack raises system pressure and coolant temperature, and pressure is what finds the weakest seal.
Third is coolant chemistry. Topping up with whatever is on the shelf at a petrol station is the fastest way to ruin a JLR cooling system. Mixing incompatible coolant types can drop the additive package out of suspension, form deposits, corrode aluminium and attack seals from the inside. A large share of “mystery” repeat leaks trace back to a wrong top-up, not a faulty part.
Finally, cars that sit. Low-use vehicles in Dubai dry out seals, flatten the AGM battery that runs the auxiliary electric coolant pumps, and allow deposits to settle. Storage is not kind to a cooling system.
How the Leak Should Be Diagnosed
A correct diagnosis follows a set sequence, and you should expect the workshop to describe it before quoting. The engine is inspected cold and degreased so old residue does not mask a fresh leak. A pressure test is then applied at the expansion tank cap, holding system pressure with the engine off so the leak reveals itself under controlled conditions. If nothing shows, UV dye goes into the system and the car is driven and heat-cycled before being brought back under UV light, because many Vogue leaks only appear at full temperature and pressure.
Alongside that, a proper workshop will check what the coolant loss is doing elsewhere. A combustion gas test on the expansion tank rules out a head gasket. The engine oil is checked for emulsion and the transmission fluid for cross-contamination from the heat exchanger — worth confirming even if the car shifts normally, since a failing ATF cooler is one of the few faults that ties the cooling system to the transmission. Manufacturer-level diagnostics are used to read live coolant temperatures, thermostat position, fan and electric pump commands, and stored cooling-system faults that a generic OBD reader will not show.
Only after that should you receive a quote, and the quote should name the failed component. “Coolant leak repair” as a line item is a warning sign.
What a Proper Coolant Leak Repair Involves
Sealants and stop-leak additives have no place in a Vogue cooling system. They circulate, block heater cores and narrow radiator passages, and turn a component replacement into a full radiator repair or replacement job later.
The correct approach is replacement of the failed part with the surrounding aged components that share the same access. On the supercharged V8, replacing the crossover pipe without renewing the hoses, gaskets and thermostat housing exposed during the same strip-down means paying for that labour twice within a year. The system is then refilled with the correct JLR-specification coolant using a vacuum fill, which pulls the air out of the circuit before drawing coolant in. Hand-pouring a Vogue cooling system almost guarantees a trapped air pocket, and an air pocket produces overheating and heater faults that get blamed on the repair.
The job finishes with a pressure re-test, a heat-cycle road test and a level re-check once the car is fully cold. The pressure cap, fan operation and radiator airflow should also be verified, because leaving the original overpressure condition in place simply moves the leak to the next weakest joint.

Prevention on these cars is mostly about pressure, chemistry and airflow.
Have the cooling system pressure-tested once a year rather than waiting for a warning message — a leak found as a weep is a fraction of the cost of one found as a failure. Have the coolant condition and concentration checked at every oil change, and insist on the correct JLR-specification coolant for any top-up. Keep the cooling stack clean, and have it inspected from behind, particularly if the car is driven on sand or parked outdoors; the same inspection protects the air conditioning condenser sitting in the same stack. Replace the pressure cap and ageing plastic housings preventively on older cars rather than one at a time.
Do not ignore a slow level drop. A Vogue cooling system that needs topping up between services has a leak, even if nothing is visible on the floor.
