Carzilla Auto Service repairs automatic transmissions on every Range Rover and Land Rover model at our workshop in Al Quoz Industrial Area 2. We work on the ZF 6HP, ZF 8HP and ZF 9HP gearboxes used across the Vogue, Sport, Velar, Evoque, Defender and Discovery, from a transmission fluid service and mechatronic repair to a full gearbox rebuild or replacement.
Every job starts with dealer-level JLR diagnostics, a road test and a fluid check at the correct temperature. You get a fixed written price before any work starts, with Free Pickup and Delivery* anywhere in Dubai.
Our Range Rover gearbox repair work covers the complete driveline: the automatic transmission, its electronic control unit, the torque converter, the transfer box and the differentials. Each service below is carried out in-house by our Land Rover technicians. Nothing is sent to an outside gearbox shop. For other makes, see our gearbox repair service in Dubai.
We read stored fault codes, ATF temperature, clutch slip values and adaptation data from the transmission control module using JLR Pathfinder for 2018-on vehicles and JLR SDD for earlier models, then road test the car under load. This tells us whether the fault is fluid, electrical, hydraulic or mechanical before any part is ordered.
A full Range Rover ATF service with the correct ZF Lifeguard fluid for your gearbox. On the ZF 8HP we fit a new sump pan with its integrated filter and seals. The fluid level is set through the level plug with the engine running and the ATF at the specified temperature, which is the only accurate method on these sealed units.
The mechatronic unit combines the valve body, shift solenoids and transmission control module inside the gearbox. We repair solenoid, speed sensor and lead frame faults, replace leaking mechatronic connector sleeves, and code and adapt the unit to the vehicle after fitting.
Shudder at 60 to 90 km/h, slipping on light throttle and high ATF temperature often come from a worn torque converter lock-up clutch. We replace or remanufacture the converter and flush the ATF cooler circuit so friction material does not return to the new unit.
A full Range Rover transmission overhaul: the gearbox is removed and stripped, then rebuilt with new clutch packs, steel plates, seals, bushings and filter. Clearances are measured on assembly, and the rebuilt gearbox is refitted, filled, programmed and adapted.
When the gear set or casing is damaged, we fit a remanufactured or tested used transmission, transfer the mechatronic coding, update the software to the latest JLR calibration and complete all adaptation routines before handover.
"Transfer Box Fault" and "Low Range Not Available" messages are usually the transfer box actuator motor, its position sensor or worn transfer box oil, not the main gearbox. We test and repair the transfer case, replace the actuator and refill with the specified fluid.
We trace and repair ATF leaks from the plastic sump pan, the mechatronic connector sleeve, the ATF cooler lines and the front pump seal. Low fluid is one of the main causes of gearbox overheating and clutch slip on Range Rovers.
Repairs for a rotary gear selector that will not rise, "Gear Selector Fault" warnings, the car not engaging Park, and shift-by-wire faults on newer electronic shifters. These are electrical faults and are often cheaper to fix than owners expect.
Whine, clunk and vibration from the rear differential, the electronic locking rear differential, and the PTU and rear drive unit on the Evoque and Discovery Sport. These faults are often mistaken for a gearbox problem.
After a battery change, fluid service or repair, the gearbox must relearn its clutch fill values. We load the latest JLR transmission software and run the adaptation reset, which cures many harsh-shift complaints on its own.
These are the Range Rover transmission problems we see most often at our Dubai workshop. Booking an inspection at the first symptom usually keeps the job to a fluid service, software update or seal repair instead of a full rebuild.
"Transmission Fault" or "Gearbox Fault" on the dash, often with limited gears. Common causes are low ATF, a mechatronic or speed sensor fault, or low battery voltage.
Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts and clunky downshifts. Usually lost adaptations, old software, worn ATF or valve body wear.
Engine revs rise without the car speeding up. Points to low fluid pressure, worn clutch packs or a slipping torque converter.
A pause or thump when moving from Park to Drive or Reverse, or after the engine restarts at a traffic light. Often low ATF or a fault in the start-stop hydraulic system.
A vibration like driving over rumble strips at 60 to 90 km/h under light throttle. The classic sign of torque converter lock-up clutch wear or degraded ATF.
The gearbox holds one gear to protect itself. The fault code tells us whether it is electrical, hydraulic or mechanical, so do not clear it before diagnosis.
High ATF temperature warnings in summer traffic or when towing. Usually a sand-blocked ATF cooler, low fluid or a slipping converter.
Red or brown spots under the middle of the car. Typical sources are the sump pan, the mechatronic connector sleeve and the cooler lines.
Range Rovers do not all use the same transmission. The gearbox fitted depends on the model, generation and engine, and each one has its own fluid, its own service procedure and its own known faults. This is the starting point for every Range Rover transmission repair we carry out.

Found on the L322 Vogue and L320 Sport. The mechatronic connector sleeve hardens and leaks ATF, which can also wick into the electrical connector. Worn valve body bores and bushings cause harsh 2-3 shifts, flare between gears and limp mode. Most of these gearboxes have never had a fluid change.
Used on the L405, L494, L460, L461, Velar and Defender. The plastic sump pan with built-in filter can leak at the seal, the torque converter lock-up clutch can cause shudder, and the start-stop hydraulic pressure store can give a delayed take-off after an auto stop. Harsh shifts after a battery change are usually lost adaptations.
Fitted to the Evoque and Discovery Sport. Harsh or slow 1-2 and 2-3 shifts and clunks when slowing down are common, and many are cured by the latest JLR transmission software and an adaptation reset. Faults in the PTU and rear drive unit are often blamed on this gearbox.
Heat is the main enemy of an automatic gearbox. ATF breaks down much faster once it runs hot for long periods, and in a Dubai summer a Range Rover gearbox spends most of its life near the top of its temperature range. As the fluid oxidises, its friction properties change, and that shows up as shudder, harsh shifts and slipping.
Several local conditions add to the problem. Fine sand packs the ATF cooler and radiator stack from behind, so the cooler looks clean from the front but cannot shed heat. Stop-start traffic keeps the torque converter unlocked, which generates more heat than steady cruising. Towing boats, dune driving in low range and long idling with the AC on all push ATF temperature higher. Our guide to how Dubai heat damages car engines explains the same cooling stack problem from the engine side.
The "sealed for life" label is the other cause. ZF and JLR do not set a short fluid interval, but in UAE conditions we recommend a Range Rover transmission fluid change every 60,000 to 80,000 km. Many imported Range Rovers also arrive with no gearbox service history at all. A UAE VIN check and a Range Rover pre-purchase inspection will show you what has, or has not, been done before you buy.
Every Range Rover gearbox repair at Carzilla follows the same order, so the fault is fixed once and the cause is dealt with too.
We collect your Range Rover anywhere in Dubai and record when the fault happens: cold or hot, in traffic or on the motorway, and which gears.
Fault codes, live ATF temperature, clutch slip and adaptation values are read with Pathfinder or SDD, followed by a road test that reproduces the fault.
We check the ATF level at temperature and inspect the fluid and filter. Burnt fluid or friction material tells us how far the wear has gone.
You receive a fixed price with clear options: repair, rebuild or replace. No work starts until you approve it.
Genuine or OE-supplier parts and the correct ZF Lifeguard fluid. The ATF cooler is cleaned or replaced so the new parts are protected.
Latest JLR software, adaptation reset, final road test and delivery back to you with a warranty on the repair.

Gearbox faults are often linked to other systems. A misfire can feel like a harsh shift, and a weak battery can trigger a transmission warning. Our Range Rover specialists cover the whole vehicle.
Our Range Rover gearbox workshop is at 20 C Street, Al Quoz Industrial Area 2, close to Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. If you are searching for Range Rover transmission repair near me, our Free Pickup and Delivery* service covers all of Dubai, including:
At Carzilla, a Range Rover transmission fluid and filter service costs around AED 1,400 to 2,800, mechatronic or valve body repair AED 4,000 to 9,000, and a full transmission rebuild AED 14,000 to 30,000 or more. The exact price depends on your model and gearbox and is confirmed in writing after diagnosis.
In UAE conditions we recommend a Range Rover transmission fluid change every 60,000 to 80,000 km, or sooner if you tow, drive off-road or sit in heavy traffic. The ATF must be the correct ZF Lifeguard specification for your gearbox and the level must be set at temperature.
No. "Sealed for life" means there is no dipstick and no short service interval in the handbook. ATF still breaks down with heat and use, and in Dubai temperatures old fluid is one of the main causes of shudder, harsh shifts and early gearbox failure.
Only gently and only as far as needed. If the car is in limp mode, slipping, or showing a transmission overheating warning, stop and arrange recovery. Driving on can turn a sensor or fluid problem into internal damage. We offer Free Pickup and Delivery* within Dubai.
A rebuild is usually the better option. It costs less than a replacement unit, keeps your original gearbox that is already coded to the car, and replaces every wear part. Replacement makes sense when the casing or gear set is damaged beyond repair.
A fluid service, software update or leak repair is usually done the same day. Mechatronic and torque converter jobs take one to three working days. A full Range Rover transmission rebuild typically takes five to eight working days, depending on parts.
The gearbox control module can lose its learned clutch fill values when the battery is disconnected or runs flat. The result is harsh or clunky shifting until the values are relearned. A transmission adaptation reset with JLR diagnostics usually fixes it straight away.
Yes. The Defender L663 and Discovery 5 use the same ZF 8HP family as the Range Rover, and the Discovery Sport uses the ZF 9HP like the Evoque. We repair all Land Rover transmissions, transfer boxes and differentials at our Al Quoz workshop.
