A BYD pre-purchase inspection checklist is not a petrol-car inspection with a battery test bolted on the end. On an Atto 3, Seal, Han, Tang, Dolphin, Sealion or a DM-i plug-in hybrid, most of the value in the car sits in three places a standard used-car check never touches: the Blade Battery pack, the charging system, and the software. A used BYD can pass a visual inspection, drive perfectly on a ten-minute test drive, and still have a battery management system logging isolation faults, a failing on-board charger, or a Chinese-market specification that cannot use a UAE charging network properly.
The other thing that makes a BYD inspection different is timing. Many of these checks only produce a valid result when the car is in a specific state. You cannot measure a 12V parasitic drain on a car that was driven to the meeting point. You cannot see a charging fault on a car that is not plugged in. This guide is therefore organised the way an EV inspection actually runs at the workshop: the paperwork stage, the cold car, the car on charge, the car on the road, and the car on the lift.
Before You See the Car: VIN, Spec and Ownership Checks
Start with the vehicle identification number and the paperwork, because these decide whether the rest of the inspection is even worth paying for.
Run a UAE VIN check to confirm the build, the import route and any recorded accident or write-off history. The critical split in the UAE market is GCC-supplied versus grey-import Chinese-domestic cars. Chinese-market BYDs are often built with a GB/T charging port instead of the Type 2 / CCS2 standard used here, which means home wallboxes and DEWA Green Charger stations either need an adapter or will not connect at all. Chinese-spec cars may also run domestic-market infotainment with limited English, no local OTA server access, and no eligibility for the local warranty. None of that makes the car unbuyable, but it changes what it is worth and who can service it.
Then confirm the registration status, outstanding finance, accumulated fines and Salik balance, and check that the chassis plate matches the Mulkiya. If the seller cannot produce a service history, treat the car as unserviced rather than lightly used. Battery and drivetrain warranty transfer normally depends on an unbroken authorised service record, and a grey import usually has no factory warranty in the UAE at all.
Checks That Only Work on a Cold, Parked BYD
Ask that the car is left parked overnight and not driven or charged before the inspection. That single condition unlocks several checks.
Overnight state-of-charge loss. Note the displayed percentage when the car is locked and again the next morning. A healthy BYD loses very little sitting overnight. A noticeable drop points at modules that are not sleeping, a common complaint on the Atto 3 where the infotainment or body control module wakes after the car is parked.
12V auxiliary battery condition and parasitic draw. The 12V system wakes the high-voltage system; if it is flat, the car is dead regardless of how full the traction battery is. Measure resting voltage, then measure current draw after the car has gone to sleep. In Dubai heat a 12V battery is realistically a two to three year part, so its date code matters.
Coolant levels in every expansion tank. BYD EVs run more than one thermal circuit — battery, drive unit and cabin heat pump. Check every reservoir, look for crusted residue around hose joints, and check the condenser and radiator face for packed sand, which is the single most common reason a battery cooling system underperforms here.
Underbody and pack casing. Kneel and look along the battery floor. Deep scrape marks from ramps, kerbs and community speed bumps are a serious finding on any BYD, and more serious on the Seal, where the cell-to-body construction makes the pack part of the vehicle structure. Dents, gouges or sealant repairs on the pack casing are a walk-away signal.
Body, glass and paint. Check panel gaps, paint thickness and glass etching for accident repair. If a windscreen has been replaced, the DiPilot camera should have been recalibrated afterwards — many are not. Paint work itself is straightforward to assess and to correct later at an auto body shop or through a car painting service, but it tells you the car has a history worth investigating.
Checks That Only Work While the BYD Is Charging
Charging is where BYD faults hide, and it is the stage most used-car inspections skip entirely.
Plug the car into an AC wallbox first. Confirm the handshake completes without a “Check OBC System” message, confirm the charge port latch releases and locks cleanly, and confirm the car draws close to its rated AC power rather than a reduced trickle. Then run a short DC session at a public fast charger. Watch the delivered power against the state of charge. Some tapering as the pack fills is normal; early, aggressive derating on a warm pack points at thermal management, not chemistry.
While the car charges, check the charge port pins for heat discolouration and the cable for damage. An on-board charger fault, a failed charge port or a handshake problem is a repairable item, but it is a proper workshop job on the high-voltage side, not something to negotiate down and ignore.
Checks That Only Work on the Road
Drive the car long enough to reach normal operating temperature, and drive it in more than one mode.
Listen for drive-unit whine that rises and falls with speed, which suggests reduction-gear or bearing wear. Feel the transition between regenerative and friction braking — a shudder, a soft spot or a late grab usually means glazed or corroded rotors rather than a control fault, because regen means the friction brakes are used lightly and rust rather than wear. Test one-pedal driving and standard regen settings separately.
On a DM-i plug-in hybrid, force the engine to run by dropping the battery low or selecting the mode that starts it. Listen to the start, check for smoke, and confirm the switch between electric and hybrid drive is smooth. Then check steering feel on centre, listen for suspension knock over speed bumps, and confirm the adaptive cruise and lane systems engage rather than reporting a sensor fault.
Checks That Only Work With the Car on a Lift
The lift stage is where an independent workshop earns its fee.
A technician with BYD-capable diagnostic equipment should read stored and pending fault codes from the battery management system, the motor controller, the on-board charger and the body modules — not just generic OBD-II engine codes, which reveal almost nothing on an EV. That scan should include cell voltage spread, pack temperature spread, isolation resistance values and any logged charging faults. Wide cell voltage deviation or a history of isolation warnings is a far better indicator of pack condition than a single state-of-health number.
Physically, the lift check covers high-voltage cabling and orange loom condition, connector seals, pack mounting bolts and torque marks, evidence of water ingress, coolant weeping at the pack ports, drive-unit oil seepage, suspension bushings and top mounts under a two-tonne kerb weight, brake rotor corrosion and caliper slide-pin freedom, and tyre wear pattern and date codes. On a DM-i car it also covers the engine’s oil condition, plugs and the EHS transmission fluid, since these are conventional items handled the same way as any engine or gearbox inspection.
Blade Battery Health: What State of Health Really Means
The Blade Battery uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry, which is genuinely durable and heat-tolerant compared with nickel-based packs. It also has a very flat discharge voltage curve, and that has a practical consequence: the BMS estimates state of charge partly by counting current, so on a car that is never charged to full and never run low, the estimate drifts. A used BYD showing odd range behaviour is often a BMS that needs recalibrating through a full charge cycle, not a degraded pack.
That is why a single reported percentage is not enough. A meaningful battery health report combines the BMS state-of-health value with cell voltage spread, temperature spread across the pack, charge and discharge history, and a measured energy figure over a controlled charge. Interpreting all four together is what separates a real assessment from a screenshot.
Why These Problems Develop in the UAE
Ambient heat is the constant. High temperature accelerates calendar ageing, especially on a car habitually parked outdoors at a high state of charge, and it shortens 12V battery life dramatically. Sand is the second factor: it packs into the condenser and radiator stack from behind, quietly reducing the cooling capacity the battery depends on, which is why a weak AC system and poor battery thermal performance often turn out to be the same fault.
Short trips and heavy regen use leave friction brakes cold and lightly worked, so rotors corrode and caliper pins seize long before the pads wear out. Speed bumps and ramps punish a low, heavy EV floor. And cars stored for long periods develop their own set of faults — flat 12V batteries, drifted SOC estimation, dried damper seals, flat-spotted tyres and stale fuel in hybrids.
How These Faults Are Fixed
Most findings are repairable, and knowing the fix helps you price the car. A 12V drain is resolved by a parasitic draw test, module software update and a heat-rated replacement battery. Charging faults are traced to the on-board charger, the port assembly or the handshake logic, and modules are repaired or replaced. Cooling problems usually start with cleaning the condenser stack and pressure-testing the loops. Brake judder is fixed with rotor and pad replacement and caliper servicing, not more regen. SOC drift is corrected with a full recalibration cycle. Software faults are cleared with the correct OTA or workshop update. Cell-level pack faults are addressed by module replacement rather than replacing the entire battery.
The only findings that should end a purchase are structural pack damage, evidence of flood exposure, a history of isolation faults with no repair record, and a chassis or VIN discrepancy.
How to Prevent These Problems After You Buy
Keep the car between roughly 20% and 90% for daily use, and use a full charge periodically to keep the BMS calibrated — LFP tolerates this far better than other chemistries. Park in shade where possible. Wash the front of the car properly and have the cooling stack cleaned before summer. Brake firmly on purpose once in a while so the rotors clean themselves, and have brake fluid changed on time. Replace the 12V battery on age, not on failure. Keep software current. Have suspension, steering and alignment checked after any hard kerb strike. And keep the RTA inspection and service record complete, because on a used EV the documented history is a large part of the resale value.
Getting a BYD Inspected Before You Buy
A proper used-BYD inspection needs three things a general workshop rarely has together: BYD-capable diagnostic software, a safe high-voltage working procedure, and someone who has seen enough of these cars to know which faults are normal and which are expensive.
