Bentley builds heavy, high-output, mechanically dense cars. A Continental GT or Flying Spur weighs well over two tonnes, carries a twin-turbocharged engine packed tightly into the bay, and rides on air suspension controlled by several networked modules. None of that is fragile, but all of it is loaded — and loaded components fail in predictable patterns.
This guide explains the most common Bentley problems by system: why each fault develops, what the correct repair looks like, and how to stop it happening again. Why Bentley Problems Happen the Way They Do
Three factors drive most Bentley repairs, and none of them is mileage.
Heat cycling. Rubber, plastic and elastomer parts fail by ageing, not by distance. Every time the engine bay reaches operating temperature and cools again, seals lose plasticiser and harden slightly. In UAE ambient conditions that cycle is far more aggressive than in Europe, which is why a 40,000 km Bentley here can leak like a 120,000 km car elsewhere.
Low usage. Many Bentleys in Dubai are second or third cars. Standing still is worse for them than driving. Seals shrink, air springs take a fold set, batteries sulphate, brake discs corrode and fuel ages.
Complexity and mass. Bushings, bearings, air springs and brake components carry more load than on a normal car, so wear items reach their limit sooner.
Bentley W12 Engine Problems
The 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 is the signature Bentley engine and the source of the most expensive repairs.
Ignition coil and misfire faults. Twelve coils sit in a hot, tightly enclosed vee. Heat degrades the coil windings and misfires appear under load first, often before any warning light. Coils should be replaced as a full set, not one at a time, and spark plugs renewed with them.
Cam cover and oil filter housing leaks. The cam covers sit inside the vee where heat is highest. Once the seal hardens, oil weeps down the block and burns off against the exhaust and turbo heat shields, producing the classic burning-oil smell with no visible drip. Oil cooler and filter housing seals do the same. Proper repair means cleaning the area completely, replacing the seals with the correct anaerobic sealant or gasket as specified, and checking crankcase pressure before signing the job off — a blocked PCV system will push the new seals out just as it did the old ones.
Turbocharger oil feed and return lines. These carry hot oil close to the turbine housing. When the line or its seal fails, oil hits a red-hot surface. This is a genuine fire risk and is not a fault to postpone.
Timing chain tensioners. On earlier W12s the chain drive sits at the rear of the engine. A rattle on cold start that lasts a second or two is the early warning. Access frequently requires the engine to come out, so the labour dominates the bill — which is why early diagnosis is worth real money.
Coolant leaks and the water-cooled alternator. The W12 alternator is liquid-cooled and its coolant O-rings harden with age, causing slow coolant loss with no obvious puddle. Plastic thermostat housings and coolant crossover pipes fail the same way.
Carbon buildup. Direct injection means no fuel washes the intake valves. Deposits build up and cause rough idle, cold-start stumble and reduced throttle response. The fix is walnut blasting, not additives. See Bentley engine work and general engine diagnostics for the broader picture.
Bentley 4.0 V8 Engine Problems
The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 places the turbos inside the vee — a hot-V layout. It is a strong engine but heat management is its weak point.
Oil coking in the turbo feed lines is the main issue, made worse by short trips and by shutting the engine down immediately after hard driving. High-pressure fuel pump and injector faults show up as long cranking and a rough warm idle. Intake carbon affects the V8 in the same way as the W12. Thermostat and coolant pipe leaks are common once the plastic ages.

Bentley Oil Leaks: Where They Actually Come From
Oil rarely leaks from where it drips. Undertrays and airflow move oil rearward, so the drip on the floor is often a metre behind the source. The correct diagnostic order is: identify the fluid, degrease the entire area, drive the car, then re-inspect and work to the highest wet point.
The usual sources are cam covers, oil filter housing and cooler seals, turbo lines, the sump gasket, the timing cover and, at the worst end, the rear main seal — which needs the gearbox out. Before replacing any seal, crankcase pressure should be measured. Excess pressure from a failed PCV system is the single most common reason a resealed engine leaks again within a year.
Bentley Air Suspension Problems
Air suspension is the most frequently repaired system on the Continental range and the Bentayga.
The air spring itself fails first. The rubber rolling lobe abrades against airborne silica dust and loses plasticiser in high heat, so it develops a pinhole leak. The first symptom is one corner sitting low overnight, or the compressor running longer and more often than it used to.
When a leak is ignored, the compressor runs continuously to compensate, overheats and burns out. That is the cascade that turns an air-spring job into a compressor, valve block and dryer job. Any compressor replacement must include a new desiccant dryer — coastal humidity saturates it, and wet air corrodes the valve seats.
Two things are commonly misdiagnosed. First, the Bentayga’s 48V Dynamic Ride active anti-roll system is separate hardware from the air suspension; a roll-control fault is not an air fault. Second, low battery voltage produces suspension error messages on a healthy system, so voltage is checked first. After any strut replacement, ride height calibration and a four-wheel alignment are mandatory.

Bentley Transmission Problems
Most modern Bentleys use a ZF eight-speed automatic or, on the latest Continental GT, an eight-speed dual clutch. Older Continentals use a six-speed automatic.
Common complaints are harsh engagement from Park to Drive, a shudder at steady cruise as the torque converter locks up, and delayed downshifts. The usual cause is degraded fluid. “Lifetime fill” does not survive UAE heat — the fluid and filter should be changed at roughly 60,000 to 80,000 km, and earlier for cars used hard or in constant traffic. Mechatronic unit faults, valve body wear and worn transfer case fluid on all-wheel-drive models make up most of the rest.

Bentley Electrical and Battery Problems
Electrical complaints are the most common single reason a Bentley refuses to start.
A modern Bentley has dozens of control modules and a normal parasitic draw of only 20 to 50 milliamps once the car has gone to sleep. Anything that keeps a module awake — a faulty door latch microswitch, an aftermarket tracker or a dashcam in parking mode — will flatten the battery in days.
AGM batteries last roughly 24 to 36 months in UAE heat. When one is replaced it must be registered and coded with factory-level diagnostics, or the charging system continues to charge to the old battery’s profile and the new battery fails early. On older Continentals and Flying Spurs the fibre-optic infotainment ring is an all-or-nothing network — one module that fails to sleep keeps the whole ring awake.
Bentley Brake Problems
Front discs on a Continental are large, and pads and discs are consumables that wear faster than most owners expect because of the car’s weight.
Brake judder is usually not warped discs. It is normally uneven pad transfer film, hub runout, or worn front suspension bushings letting the wheel move under braking — which is why brake and suspension faults are so often diagnosed together.
Carbon-ceramic discs are not judged on thickness. They are condemned on mass loss, weighed against the factory minimum, and they require their own pad compound. The electronic parking brake must be put into service mode with proper diagnostics before rear pads are changed; forcing the caliper piston back mechanically shears the spindle and destroys the caliper. Bentley Cooling and AC Problems
The radiator and condenser stack packs with fine sand from behind, which no visual inspection from the front will reveal. Cooling performance drops gradually, and AC pressures rise. Compressor failure, condenser leaks and blend door actuator faults account for most remaining AC complaints. Any AC repair should include a proper vacuum hold test and a charge measured by weight, not by pressure gauge alone. See car AC repair.
Bentley Steering, Bushings and Wheel Bearings
Weight and heat shorten the life of control arm bushings, drop links and wheel bearings. Symptoms are a knock over expansion joints, vague straight-line steering and a hum that changes when the car is loaded through a curve. Bushings must be torqued at ride height, not with the suspension hanging on the hoist, or they are pre-loaded and tear early. How to Prevent the Most Common Bentley Problems
- Change engine oil by time as well as distance. Heat degrades oil in a lightly used car just as driving does. See oil change services.
- Drive the car properly at least fortnightly, long enough to reach full operating temperature. Short trips cause more damage than long ones.
- Fix a single low corner immediately. An unfixed air leak is what destroys the compressor.
- Replace the battery on time and have it coded. Do not wait for a no-start.
- Change transmission and transfer case fluid on a real interval, not a “lifetime” one.
- Have the cooling stack cleaned from behind during service, not just rinsed from the front.
- Investigate an oil smell even with no drip on the floor. Turbo line leaks are a fire risk.
- Use a workshop with factory-level Bentley diagnostics. Generic scan tools cannot code batteries, calibrate ride height or place the parking brake in service mode.
