BMW Engine Overheating in Dubai, Causes, Signs & What To Do

Overheating is the single most expensive way a BMW fails in the UAE, and it is almost never sudden. By the time the temperature warning appears on the iDrive screen, something in the cooling circuit has usually been degrading for months — a plastic housing going brittle, an electric water pump slowly losing flow, a radiator core packed solid with fine desert dust.

From the N52 onwards, BMW replaced the old belt-driven pump and wax thermostat with an electric water pump and a map-controlled thermostat, both commanded by the DME. The engine is deliberately held between roughly 105°C and 110°C under light load to improve combustion efficiency and emissions, and only cooled down harder when the DME sees boost, high load or high ambient temperature.

Modern BMWs use a PWM-controlled electric fan driven by its own module; older six-cylinders used a viscous clutch fan. Either can fail without lighting a warning. The test is simple in principle: at idle with the AC on maximum, the fan should be audibly working.
