Your Headlights Are Plastic, and That Changes Everything

Almost every headlight built since the mid-1990s uses a polycarbonate lens rather than glass. Polycarbonate is light, impact-resistant and can be moulded into the complex shapes that modern lighting design demands. It has one weakness: raw polycarbonate degrades under ultraviolet light very quickly.

Manufacturers deal with this by flow-coating the outside of the lens with a thin, hard, UV-absorbing layer, usually a siloxane or acrylic hard coat, then curing it. That coating — not the plastic — is what you are looking through. When a headlight goes yellow, cloudy or chalky, what has actually failed is that factory coating. The plastic underneath then begins to oxidise on its own, which is why a neglected lens eventually goes from hazy to visibly amber and rough to the touch.

This matters because it explains why household polishes and supermarket restoration kits give a result that looks excellent for a few weeks and then comes back worse. They remove the failed coating and leave the polycarbonate naked in the sun.

Why Headlights Yellow So Fast in Dubai’s Climate

The UAE compresses years of coating wear into a very short period, and it does so through several mechanisms at once.

Ultraviolet intensity is the obvious one. UV index readings above 10 are routine for much of the year, and the hard coat is a consumable that absorbs UV until it can no longer do so. Heat accelerates the same chemistry. A bonnet-level surface in an open car park can sit far above ambient for hours a day, and thermal cycling between that and cold air conditioning stresses the bond between the coating and the lens.

Then there is sand. Fine silica carried on the wind is harder than the hard coat, and highway driving effectively sandblasts the leading face of the lens with it. That produces microscopic pitting long before anything is visible, and each pit is a place where UV can attack from the side. Add the aggressive traffic-film removers and strong alkaline shampoos used in quick washes, plus rotating brushes that scour the surface, and the coating is being attacked chemically and mechanically at the same time. Cloudy, Hazy or Foggy? Four Faults That Look the Same

Before anyone touches a lens with abrasive, the fault needs to be identified correctly, because only one of the four common conditions is actually a restoration job.

External oxidation is the classic case: yellowing and haze you can feel from outside, which clears momentarily when the lens is wet. This is the one restoration solves outright.

Internal condensation is moisture inside the housing, showing as droplets or a fog that changes through the day. Its causes are a blocked or perished breather membrane, a failed seal, a crack from a stone chip, or a badly done aftermarket bulb retrofit that left an unsealed opening. Polishing the outside achieves nothing here; the housing has to be dried, the ingress point found and the vent restored.

Internal reflector or inner-lens degradation happens when the vaporised aluminium reflector or the projector’s inner optics discolour from prolonged heat, usually after someone fitted bulbs with a higher wattage than the housing was designed for. The outside can be made perfectly clear and the beam will still be dull and yellow.

Impact and stress cracking is self-explanatory but often hidden under haze, and it is the reason a proper assessment happens on a clean lens under strong light — the same discipline applied during a full car inspection.

What a Proper Headlight Restoration Service Involves

A workshop-grade restoration is a paint-shop process, not a detailing shortcut, which is why it usually sits alongside body and paint work rather than with the wash bay.

The lens is decontaminated and the surrounding paint, trim and any exposed bodywork are fully masked, because the sanding stage is genuinely aggressive and tape lines on a bumper are a costly mistake. The technician then wet-sands progressively — typically starting around 800 grit where oxidation is deep and stepping through 1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000 — with each stage removing the sanding marks of the one before. Water and low speed matter here: polycarbonate softens under heat, and an overheated lens goes permanently hazy in a way no polish will recover.

Machine polishing follows, using compounds formulated for plastics rather than clearcoat. At this point the lens looks perfect, and this is exactly where cheap jobs stop.

The step that decides whether the work lasts is re-protection. The removed factory coating has to be replaced with a UV-stable barrier — either a two-pack clear with UV absorbers applied in a controlled booth environment, or a dedicated hard coat cured with heat or lamps. Why Cheap Headlight Polishing in Dubai Fails Within Months

Sealing over a lens that was not fully dried, or over sanding dust left in the edges, traps contamination under the new coating and produces a cloudy film that can only be corrected by sanding the whole thing back off. The honest test of a restoration service is not how the lens looks when the car is handed back — everything looks good then — but what was applied after the polishing stage and what protection period comes with it.

The Real Benefit on a High-End Car

On an older economy car, a clouded headlight is cosmetic and a replacement unit is affordable. On a modern luxury or exotic vehicle, neither is true.

Current headlamps are sealed assemblies containing LED matrix arrays, adaptive levelling motors, cornering modules and their own control units. A single unit for a large German SUV or an exotic can run into five figures in dirhams, frequently needs coding to the vehicle after fitment, and often has a lead time on genuine supply. Restoration returns the same unit to near-original clarity for a small fraction of that.

There is a safety and compliance dimension too. A degraded lens scatters light rather than projecting it, which cuts effective illumination sharply and simultaneously increases glare for oncoming traffic. When Restoration Isn’t the Right Answer

Restoration has limits, and a workshop that never says so is one to be careful with. If the haze is inside the housing, the job is sealing and drying, not polishing. If the reflector has discoloured or the inner optics have gone, the light output problem is internal and no external work will fix it. If the lens is cracked, or if oxidation has eaten so deep that sanding it out would leave the lens visibly thin or distorted, replacement is the correct call. Keeping Restored Headlights Clear in the UAE

Prevention here is mostly about protecting the coating, whichever coating is on the car.

Avoid solvent-heavy or ammonia-based cleaners on the lens; they attack hard coats. Park in shade or under cover where possible, since UV exposure hours are the single biggest variable in how long a restoration lasts.

The most effective step is a sacrificial layer. A ceramic-type coating is a lighter alternative that reduces chemical attack but not impact.
