Carzilla is an independent Land Rover workshop in Al Quoz Industrial Area 2 that repairs and services the Freelander 2 (L359, 2006–2015) and the original Freelander 1. We diagnose with JLR SDD, repair the Haldex 4x4 coupling, rear differential, PTU and Aisin 6-speed automatic gearbox, and work on the 2.2 TD4 and SD4 diesel and petrol engines using genuine and OEM parts.
The Freelander is a different car underneath from the bigger Land Rovers. It uses a transverse engine, an electronically controlled Haldex coupling instead of a transfer case, and steel coil-spring suspension rather than air suspension. Most of its expensive faults sit in the driveline, so a correct diagnosis starts with the Haldex unit, the rear differential and the power transfer unit (PTU), not with guesswork parts.
The Freelander 2 shares its 2.2 diesel engine, Aisin 6-speed automatic and Haldex rear coupling with the first-generation Range Rover Evoque, and in North America it was sold as the Land Rover LR2. It was replaced in 2015 by the Discovery Sport. Our Land Rover repair Dubai team services all three, so parts knowledge and diagnostic data carry across.
Every Freelander job is diagnosed, repaired and road-tested inside our own workshop. You receive a written diagnosis and a fixed price before any part is ordered.
Four-wheel drive on the Freelander 2 runs through an electro-hydraulic Haldex coupling on the rear differential. An "All terrain mode disabled" or 4x4 fault message usually means a failed pump, a blocked filter, old fluid, a pressure sensor fault or a chafed harness. We test the system on SDD, service the fluid and filter, and repair or replace the coupling.
A drumming or humming noise from the rear at cruising speed is the classic sign of worn rear differential bearings, most common on 2007–2011 cars. A whirring from the front footwell points to the PTU bearings, and a clunk under load can mean stripped PTU splines. We confirm the source on the road and on the lift, then rebuild or replace the unit and refill with the correct oil.
The 2.2 TD4, SD4 and eD4 diesel needs care on the EGR cooler and valve, DPF, turbocharger, crankshaft pulley and timing belt. We also repair the 3.2 i6 and 2.0 Si4 petrol engines, and Freelander 1 K-series and KV6 head gasket failures, using pressure tests and combustion gas tests before any strip-down.
The Freelander 2 automatic is the Aisin AWF21 6-speed, with its control module inside the gearbox. Harsh or delayed shifts, flaring and a jerk into Drive are often old fluid and lost adaptations. We change fluid to the correct level at temperature, reset adaptations on SDD and repair the valve body or gearbox. Manual clutch and flywheel work is also carried out.
"Park Brake Fault" or a parking brake that will not apply or release is a known Freelander 2 issue. Land Rover's own service guidance points to damaged harnesses and loose connectors under the vehicle before the module. We test the circuit, repair the wiring, replace the actuator or module only when proven, and calibrate the system on SDD.
Weak cooling in Dubai summers is usually a slow refrigerant leak, a condenser packed with sand or a worn compressor clutch. We leak test before refilling, clean or replace the condenser, repair the compressor and recharge the R134a system by weight to the factory figure.
Stop-start Dubai traffic wears Freelander pads and discs quickly. We replace front and rear pads, discs and wear sensors, service sticking calipers and flush the brake fluid, then check the parking brake operation and reset the service warnings.
Knocks and wandering usually come from lower arm bushes, drop links, strut mounts or the steering rack. We replace worn parts, check that factory campaigns on the rear suspension links and subframe bolts were completed, and finish with a four-wheel alignment.
Minor and major Freelander service with the correct Land Rover-approved oil, including low-SAPS oil for DPF-equipped diesels. Filters, fluids, brakes, driveline oils and the Haldex system are all inspected, and the service is recorded for your history.
Many Freelander warning messages start with low voltage. We load test the battery and charging system, trace parasitic drains, repair water-damaged wiring and connectors, and code new modules on SDD so they work with the rest of the car.
Accident repair, bumper and panel replacement, dent repair and colour-matched paintwork on the Freelander steel body, with parking sensors and cameras refitted and checked. Detailing and interior work are available in the same workshop.
These are the Freelander faults our Dubai workshop sees most often. Catching the driveline noises early is what keeps the repair to one component instead of three.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Our repair |
|---|---|---|
| "All terrain mode disabled" or 4x4 fault | Haldex pump, filter, fluid, pressure sensor, fuse or harness | SDD pressure test, Haldex service, coupling repair |
| Drumming or humming from the rear | Worn rear differential bearings | Rear differential rebuild or exchange unit |
| Whirring or clunk from the front | PTU bearing wear or stripped splines | PTU repair, propshaft and joint check |
| Harsh, delayed or flaring gear changes | Old fluid, lost adaptations, valve body wear | Fluid change at correct level, adaptation reset, gearbox repair |
| "Park Brake Fault" or brake will not release | Damaged harness or connector, actuator or module | Circuit test, wiring repair, SDD calibration |
| DPF light, low power or limp mode | Blocked DPF from short trips, EGR or turbo fault | Forced regeneration, EGR and turbo repair |
| Coolant loss or overheating | Thermostat, water pump, hoses or sand-packed radiator | Pressure test and cooling system repair |
| Freelander 1 vibration or knocking | Stiff viscous coupling loading the IRD | VCU replacement, IRD and rear differential check |
Knowing the exact generation and engine decides the parts, fluids and procedures, so we confirm the VIN before quoting.

No. The Freelander 2 uses steel coil springs with struts on all four corners. A car sitting low or knocking usually has a broken spring, worn strut or worn bushes, not an air suspension fault.
We recommend a Haldex fluid and filter change around every 30,000 km in Dubai. Land Rover does not list it as a service item, but old fluid and a blocked filter are the most common causes of Haldex pump and coupling failure.
The car will usually drive in front-wheel drive only, so short road journeys are possible. Avoid sand, towing and steep slopes, and book a diagnosis soon, because the cause can be a failing rear differential that gets worse with use.
