An engine inspection is not the same thing as a service. A service replaces what the schedule says to replace. An inspection asks a different question: what is this engine actually doing right now, and what is it about to do next? That distinction matters most in the UAE, where ambient heat, fine airborne sand and short stop-start city driving age an engine on a timeline that has very little to do with the odometer.
This guide sets out the fifteen checks that belong on any proper engine inspection checklist — whether you are running a routine engine health check, evaluating a used car before purchase, or trying to understand what a workshop should have looked at. For each one: why the fault develops, what the fix normally involves, and how to stop it coming back.
Lubrication: Checks 1–3
1. Engine oil level and condition
Pull the dipstick (or read the electronic level on cars that no longer have one) with the engine warm and the car level. You are reading three things at once: quantity, colour and texture. Milky oil suggests coolant intrusion. Gritty or metallic-feeling oil suggests wear. Oil that smells of fuel points to injector or ring problems. In Dubai heat, oil oxidises faster than the manufacturer’s home-market interval assumes, so a shortened interval through a proper oil change service is prevention, not upselling.
2. External oil leaks and seepage
Look at cam cover gaskets, the oil filter housing, the front crank seal and the rear main seal area. Heat cycling is the real culprit — rubber and composite gaskets lose plasticiser at 45°C ambient and harden until they no longer seal. The fix ranges from a straightforward gasket replacement to a gearbox-out job for a rear main seal. Before resealing anything, crankcase pressure should be checked; a blocked breather or failed PCV valve pushes oil past healthy seals and causes repeat “leak repairs” that never hold.
3. Service history and filter evidence
A filter that looks factory-fresh on a car with no paperwork is a warning, not a reassurance. Inspect the oil filter housing, the drain plug washer and the sump for signs of repeated overtightening or sealant abuse. On a used purchase, cross-check the story against a VIN check and a full car inspection rather than the seller’s folder.
Cooling System: Checks 4–6
4. Coolant level, colour and correct specification
Coolant is not generic. Mixing an incompatible formulation causes silicate drop-out that blocks the radiator core and heater matrix. Check the expansion tank when cold, look for oil film or rust-brown discolouration, and confirm the coolant type matches the manufacturer’s specification. Brown, cloudy or particle-filled coolant means a flush and a diagnosis, not a top-up.
5. Radiator, condenser and the whole cooling stack
This is the check most often skipped and the one that matters most locally. Fine desert sand packs the fins from the back of the stack, where nobody looks, choking airflow between the AC condenser, intercooler and main radiator. Symptoms show up first as poor cabin cooling — which is why an AC complaint and an overheating complaint are often the same fault. Inspection means a light behind the stack, not a glance at the front. Understanding what radiator repair involves helps set expectations before the strip-down.
6. Hoses, pressure cap, water pump and fans
Squeeze cooling hoses cold: they should be firm, not crunchy or spongy. Check the pressure cap seal, look for crust trails around the water pump weep hole, and confirm both cooling fans cut in and out correctly. A weak cap alone lowers the boiling point enough to cause intermittent overheating that no one can reproduce on a cold morning.
Air, Fuel and Combustion: Checks 7–9
7. Air filter and intake tract
Sand loading is severe here. A filter that would last 20,000 km in Europe can be visibly loaded at half that in the UAE. Check the element, the housing seal and the ducting for splits, and look for dust trails downstream — dust past the filter means abrasive wear inside the engine. Replace the element rather than blowing it out with compressed air, which ruptures the media.
8. Intake carbon and injector condition
Direct-injection engines have no fuel washing over the intake valves, so carbon builds on the valve backs and restricts airflow. The result is rough cold running, misfires under load and a slow loss of throttle response. Inspection is done by borescope through the intake. The fix is walnut blasting or chemical induction cleaning, depending on severity. Prevention is real driving — sustained highway runs and correct-octane fuel — rather than short, cold, stop-start trips only.
9. Spark plugs, coils and ignition condition
Removing plugs tells you more about combustion than any single other check. Even, light-brown tips are healthy. Oil fouling points to valve stem seals or rings; white, blistered tips point to lean running or heat stress. Coil packs fail progressively in heat and often only under load, so a stored misfire code with a clean idle is normal, not contradictory. Deeper combustion faults belong with a specialist engine repair workshop.
Electrical and Diagnostic: Checks 10–12
10. Battery, terminals and charging output
In UAE conditions an AGM battery commonly lasts 24–36 months, not the five years quoted elsewhere. Low voltage causes symptoms that mimic serious engine faults: slow cranking, false modules errors, transmission harshness, even non-starts. Test resting voltage, voltage under crank and charging output before chasing anything else. This one check prevents a large share of unnecessary diagnostic spend.
11. Stored fault codes across all modules — not just the engine
A generic OBD-II reader shows emissions codes only. Manufacturer-level tooling reads every control unit, including pending codes that have not yet lit a warning lamp. It also shows readiness monitors, which matter if the car is heading for an RTA test — clearing codes resets those monitors and guarantees a fail. 12. Wiring, grounds and heat-affected looms
Follow the harness where it runs near the exhaust, the turbochargers and the engine bay firewall. Heat hardens insulation until it cracks; sand and moisture then complete the circuit. Corroded ground points cause the most frustrating intermittent faults in the workshop, because they behave differently hot and cold.
Mechanical Condition: Checks 13–15
13. Drive belt, tensioner and pulleys
Check the accessory belt for glazing, cracking and edge fraying, then check the tensioner for play and the idler pulleys for bearing noise. Belts do not usually fail alone; a worn tensioner destroys a new belt within months, which is why replacing both together is the correct fix rather than the expensive one.
14. Engine mounts and vibration under load
Hydraulic mounts collapse quietly. The tell is vibration felt through the steering wheel at idle in gear, plus a thump on gear engagement — symptoms regularly misread as a gearbox fault and sent to transmission specialists unnecessarily. Inspect visually for fluid weeping from the mount body and check movement under load.
15. Running noise, exhaust smoke and a genuine road test
The final check is the whole engine working. Listen cold and hot for tapping (valvetrain or timing chain tensioner), rattle on start-up (chain slack or oil drain-back) and knock under load. Watch the exhaust: blue means oil, white means coolant, black means over-fuelling. Then drive the car properly — under load, at temperature, through the full rev range. Faults that hide at idle rarely survive a road test.
How Often Should an Engine Inspection Be Done?
For a luxury or performance car used in UAE conditions, a full engine inspection every six months — or before any long drive, resale, or purchase — is realistic. Cars that are stored for the summer need one before they go back into use, because sitting still causes its own faults: fuel degradation, dry starts, seized brake components and flat-spotted tyres.
Prevention, in practice, comes down to four habits: shorten oil intervals rather than following the European schedule, keep the cooling stack clean, replace the battery on age rather than failure, and drive the car long enough and hard enough to reach full operating temperature regularly.
