A Rolls-Royce does not break down the way other cars break down. It is engineered to hide effort — and that includes hiding the early signs of a fault. Sound insulation removes the noise that would warn you. Air springs absorb the vibration that would warn you. A 6.6 or 6.75 litre V12 has so much torque in reserve that it will pull cleanly on eleven cylinders. Full-length underbody trays catch fluid so you never see the drip. The result is that most Rolls-Royce problems are discovered late, when the cheap fix has already become an expensive one.
This guide explains the common Rolls-Royce problems owners actually encounter, why they happen, how a proper workshop fixes them, and what prevents them from coming back. It is organised by cause rather than by symptom, because on these cars the same underlying force produces faults in three or four different systems at once.
How Rolls-Royce Faults Differ From Other Luxury Cars
Three engineering decisions shape almost every fault list on a modern Rolls-Royce.
The first is isolation. The cabin is acoustically sealed and the body is decoupled from the road, so a failing wheel bearing, a dry suspension bush or an early exhaust leak reaches you months later than it would in an ordinary car.
The second is packaging density. The V12 sits under a sealed engine cover with turbochargers in the valley, cooling circuits stacked in front of the radiator core, and modules buried behind trim. Very few jobs are quick. That is why labour hours, not parts, dominate most Rolls-Royce repair invoices — and why a competent workshop renews adjacent seals and hoses while access is already open.
The third is electronic supervision. Ride height, damping, gearbox shift maps, engine cooling and even door closing are managed by control modules that must be scanned, coded and calibrated after work. A mechanically perfect repair that skips calibration is not a finished repair.

Cause One: Heat — Cooling System Faults and Coolant Leaks
Heat is the single biggest cause of Rolls-Royce problems in the Gulf. It attacks joints, not metal.
The V12 runs more than one coolant circuit. Alongside the main engine circuit there is an after-run electric pump that keeps coolant moving through the turbochargers once the engine is switched off, and on twin-turbo cars a separate low-temperature charge-air circuit with its own expansion tank. Owners routinely check one reservoir, find it full, and conclude the cooling system is healthy while the second tank is empty.
Why it happens here: ambient heat plus stop-start Sheikh Zayed Road traffic means the system spends its life cycling between hot and very hot. Plastic thermostat housings, composite pipe elbows, quick-connect O-rings, expansion tank seams and radiator end-tank crimps all expand and contract at different rates to the aluminium they seal against. Eventually one of them stops sealing. Coolant inhibitors also deplete on a time schedule, not a mileage one, so a low-mileage car five years into its coolant life is chemically overdue even if the odometer says otherwise.
Typical symptoms: a sweet smell after parking, needing to top up every few weeks, an overheat warning only in slow traffic, weak heater performance, or a stain on the driveway that never appears directly under the failed part because the underbody tray moves it rearwards.
The correct fix: pressure-test the system cold, then re-test hot with the after-run pump commanded on. Replace the failed component and the brittle neighbours around it. Refill using a proper vacuum fill and a commanded electric-pump purge — a system that is simply poured full will trap air, and trapped air reads as an intermittent overheat that sends owners chasing a thermostat that was never faulty. Use only the specified coolant; never tap water, never a universal green top-up.

Cause Two: Pressure — Rolls-Royce Air Suspension Problems
Every modern Rolls-Royce rides on self-levelling air springs with electronically controlled dampers. It is the system most responsible for how the car feels, and the one most likely to generate a warning message.
Why it happens here: the rubber bellows folds and unfolds thousands of times per journey. UAE heat drives plasticisers out of that rubber and makes it stiff; fine silica dust settles into the rolling fold and abrades it from the outside. Cars left standing for months develop a set crease in the fold that cracks when the car is finally driven. Meanwhile the compressor’s desiccant dryer becomes saturated in coastal humidity, pushing damp air into the airlines and shortening the life of the valve block seals.
Typical symptoms: the car sits low overnight and rises during the first minute of driving; a compressor you can hear running far more often than before; one corner visibly lower than the others; a “suspension fault” message; or a firm, unsettled ride that has crept in so gradually you stopped noticing.
The correct fix: diagnosis, in order. Check battery voltage first — low voltage produces suspension fault codes that have nothing to do with the suspension. Then read live pressures at each corner, isolate the valve block to separate a leaking strut from a leaking valve, soap-test the fittings and collets, and finish with a static hold test. The failure is not always the airbag: it is often a line fitting, a valve block seal or a dryer that has been quietly cooking a compressor for a year.
Crucially, ride height must be recalibrated after any strut or sensor replacement, and calibration must be done before any wheel alignment. Skipping it is why some cars come back from cheap repairs riding unevenly. Resist any offer to convert to coil springs — it removes the self-levelling function, corrupts the damper strategy and destroys resale value on an inspection-heavy market.

Cause Three: Oil Leaks and the Crankcase Pressure Rule
Rolls-Royce oil leaks are common, and they are very often repaired twice because the first workshop treated the symptom.
Rocker cover gaskets, the oil filter housing, the oil cooler lines, the timing cover and the rear main seal are the usual sources. What matters is why a seal that lasted a decade suddenly stops holding. In most cases, crankcase pressure has risen because the crankcase ventilation system is blocked, split or heat-hardened. The engine then pressurises itself and pushes oil past the weakest seal it can find.
The correct fix: measure crankcase pressure before authorising any reseal. If ventilation is at fault, replace it first, then reseal. Reseal without correcting pressure and the new gasket will weep within months — often at a different location, which owners understandably read as a new problem.
Two impostors are worth knowing. Air conditioning condensate under the car on a humid morning is clear, odourless water and is completely normal. And gearbox weeping is frequently misdiagnosed as a rear main seal, when the actual source is the mechatronic connector sleeve on the transmission — a far cheaper part in a far cheaper location.

Cause Four: The Stored Car — Problems Caused by Not Driving
This is the most under-discussed Rolls-Royce problem in Dubai, and the most avoidable. Many of these cars cover under 5,000 km a year and spend the summer under a cover.
What standing still does:
- Batteries die early. An AGM battery in this climate realistically lasts 24 to 36 months, and less if the car sits with modules waking to poll sensors. A weak battery is the single most common cause of a screen full of unrelated warnings — suspension, gearbox, parking brake and drivetrain messages that all clear the moment voltage is restored. Any replacement battery must be registered to the energy management system, or the car will keep charging it to the wrong profile and kill it prematurely.
- Brakes bond to discs. Humidity flash-rusts the disc surface overnight, and a car parked for weeks with warm brakes can leave pad material bonded to the rotor. The result is a shudder or a squeal that owners blame on cheap pads.
- Tyres flat-spot and age out. Rolls-Royce tyres are date-coded and are frequently replaced for age, not tread depth. A five-year-old tyre with 90% tread is still a five-year-old tyre.
- Seals dry out. Air spring folds, gearbox seals and AC shaft seals all rely on being cycled. AC systems that are never run lose refrigerant through a dried compressor seal.
Prevention is simple: drive the car properly for at least 20–30 minutes every two weeks, long enough to reach full operating temperature. Idling in the driveway achieves almost nothing. Use a quality maintenance charger if the car is stored. A short seasonal car inspection before and after a long storage period catches most of this before it becomes a repair.
Cause Five: Sand, Dust and Humidity
The cooling stack — AC condenser, low-temperature radiator, main radiator, oil coolers — packs with fine sand from behind, where you cannot see it by looking through the grille. A stack that looks clean from the front can be 40% blocked internally. The car then runs hotter, the fans run longer, and every heat-related failure above is accelerated.
Cabin and engine air filters saturate far faster than European service intervals assume. AC systems suffer twice: condensers corrode in salt-laden coastal air, and evaporator cases grow bacterial films that produce the damp smell owners notice on first start-up.
The fix and the prevention are the same: have the cooling stack separated and back-flushed as a scheduled item rather than a repair, halve the factory filter intervals, and run the AC on fresh air for a few minutes before shutdown to dry the evaporator. Gearbox and Drivetrain Problems
The ZF eight-speed automatic used across the modern range is a strong unit, and genuine internal failure is rare. What owners report as “transmission problems” is usually one of four things: low voltage, degraded fluid, lost adaptations after a battery disconnection, or engine misfire being felt through the driveline.
Heat is again the driver. Fluid that is rated for long intervals in Europe degrades faster in 45°C traffic, and degraded fluid produces exactly the hesitation and firm engagement people fear. The fix is a proper fluid and filter service with the level set at the specified temperature — not by volume, not cold — followed by an adaptation reset and a relearn drive. Cars fitted with satellite-aided transmission logic that pre-selects gears on the approach to junctions can also feel odd when GPS or map data is stale, which is a software update rather than a mechanical repair.

Brakes, Steering and the Electric Parking Brake
Rolls-Royce brake compounds are chosen for silence and low dust, which makes them softer and more prone to picking up silica. Discs are large and heavy, so any thickness variation from a hard stop after a long motorway run shows up as a low-speed shudder.
The important workshop detail is the electric parking brake at the rear. The caliper piston must be wound back electronically in service mode using proper diagnostic equipment. Forcing it back mechanically strips the spindle and turns a routine pad change into a caliper replacement. This is a genuine dividing line between workshops.
Steering complaints split by generation: the newest cars use fully electric steering and therefore have no power steering fluid at all, so any quote mentioning a power steering fluid leak on those models is an immediate red flag. Older generations do run hydraulic assistance and can leak from the rack or the lines.

The features that make a Rolls-Royce feel like a Rolls-Royce are also individual mechanisms that can fail:
- Spirit of Ecstasy retraction motor — sticking or failing to deploy, usually a motor or moisture in the mechanism rather than a control fault.
- Coach door power-close motors and latches on rear-hinged doors — wear and misalignment show as a door that closes hard or refuses the last few centimetres.
- Starlight headliner fibre-optic strands and their light source, which dim rather than fail outright.
- Umbrella housing drains, which block with dust and let water into the door cavity.
- Infotainment and network faults, especially on earlier generations whose fibre-optic communication rings drop out entirely if one module fails to wake, producing a screen full of unrelated errors.
Almost all of these are voltage-sensitive. Check the battery and charging system before chasing a module. When a module genuinely does need replacing, it must be coded to the vehicle — a plug-and-play swap will not work.
How to Prevent Most Rolls-Royce Problems
Nothing in the list above is random. Almost all of it responds to five habits:
