Aston Martins are hand-built grand tourers, and that shows in how they age. The engines are low-volume units, the chassis is bonded aluminium rather than a mass-market monocoque, and the electronics are a mix of in-house software and parts shared with Ford, Jaguar, Volvo and Mercedes-AMG depending on the model year. None of that makes the car unreliable, but it does mean the faults that show up are specific to the platform, and they are made worse by Dubai heat, dust and short stop-start journeys.
Below are the 15 problems we see most often across the Vantage, DB9, DBS, Rapide, Vanquish, DB11 and DBX, why each one happens, how it is properly fixed, and what prevents it coming back. 1. Sportshift Automated Manual Clutch Wear
The V8 Vantage Sportshift I and II use a single-clutch automated manual — a normal clutch operated by a hydraulic actuator, not a torque converter. It wears like a manual clutch, so heavy traffic, hill starts and creeping destroy it quickly. Symptoms are shudder on pull-away, a long delay engaging first, or a warning to select neutral. The fix depends on how far it has gone: clutch position re-adaptation through the transmission control module solves a large share of early complaints, but a worn clutch pack, a failing hydraulic pump or a tired accumulator needs parts. Prevention is driving technique — use manual mode in traffic, hold the car on the brake rather than the clutch, and have the adaptation checked at every service. 2. Harsh Shifting on Touchtronic and ZF Automatic Gearboxes
The DB9, DBS, Rapide and Vanquish use ZF Touchtronic automatics, and the DB11 and DBX use the ZF 8HP. These are strong units, but “fill for life” fluid is not a life sentence in the UAE. Heat breaks down the fluid and the clutch friction material it carries, which shows up as flare between gears, a thud into drive, or refusing to lock the torque converter. The correct fix is a full fluid and pan-filter service using the exact ZF-specified fluid, with the level set at the gearbox’s specified operating temperature, followed by an adaptation reset. 3. Engine Oil Leaks From Cam Covers, Seals and Cooler Lines
Oil seepage is the single most common Aston Martin complaint. On the 4.3 and 4.7 V8 and the 5.9 V12 it is usually cam cover gaskets, the front crank seal or the oil cooler lines; on the DB11 and DBX it is more often the cooler hose unions and the turbo feed lines. The cause is thermal cycling — rubber and elastomer seals lose plasticiser after years of 45°C ambient and hot shutdowns, then shrink and harden. Replacing a gasket without checking crankcase pressure is why leaks come back, so the PCV system should always be tested first. 4. Overheating and Coolant Loss in Dubai Heat
The V12 cars carry a large cooling stack — main radiators, oil coolers and the AC condenser packed close together. Fine desert sand blows in from the front and lodges between the fins, cutting airflow long before anything mechanically fails. Add plastic coolant crossover housings, thermostat housings and hose unions that go brittle with age, and you get slow coolant loss and rising temperatures in traffic. The fix is a proper back-flush of the stack, pressure testing the system, and replacing hard plastic parts rather than just topping up. 5. Ignition Coil Failure and Misfires
A V12 carries twelve coils sitting directly on top of a very hot engine. Coil boots crack, insulation degrades and one cylinder starts misfiring — you feel a shake at idle, lose power and get a flashing check engine light. The heat under the bonnet in a Dubai summer accelerates this, and short trips make it worse because the engine bay never cools properly. Coils should be replaced as a set on one bank at minimum, with new plugs at the specified interval, otherwise you replace them one at a time for years. A flashing engine light means stop driving — raw fuel destroys catalytic converters, which is a far larger bill than a coil.
6. Timing Chain Tensioner Noise and Cam Timing Faults
A rattle for one or two seconds on cold start usually means a timing chain tensioner is bleeding down when the car sits. This is common on the 5.9 V12 and on the 4.3/4.7 V8, and it gets worse on cars that are stored or driven rarely — a very common Dubai ownership pattern. Left alone, chain wear moves cam timing out of specification and sets correlation codes. The proper fix is measuring chain stretch and replacing tensioners, guides and chains as a set, not just the noisy tensioner. Prevention is running the car regularly, using the correct oil viscosity, and never stretching oil intervals, because these tensioners depend entirely on oil pressure and oil condition.
7. Carbon Buildup on Direct-Injection Engines
The 4.0 twin-turbo AMG V8 in the DB11, current Vantage and DBX uses direct injection, so no fuel washes over the intake valves. Oil vapour from the crankcase breathing system bakes onto the valve stems and restricts airflow. Symptoms are a rough cold idle, hesitation under light load, misfire codes and a drop in fuel economy, usually somewhere after 60,000–80,000 km. The only real fix is walnut shell blasting the intake ports with the manifold off; chemical cleaners do very little once the deposits are hard. Prevention is a shorter oil interval, checking the PCV system, and using quality fuel — the older port-injected 4.7 V8 and 5.9 V12 are far less affected by this.
8. Turbocharger Oil Coking and Boost Leaks
On turbocharged models, oil sitting in a hot turbo bearing housing after shutdown bakes into a hard deposit that eventually blocks the feed line and starves the bearing. You hear it as a whine or a rattle, or you see blue smoke on start-up. Charge pipes and intercooler couplers also harden and leak, which shows up as reduced boost and an underpowered car with no obvious fault. Fixes range from replacing feed and drain lines and cleaning the oil supply to a full turbo replacement if the bearing has already worn. Prevention is letting the car idle for 30–60 seconds after a hard drive before switching off, and keeping to a strict oil schedule.
9. Battery Drain and Dead-Car Electrical Faults
Aston Martins are full of modules that need to go to sleep properly, and a car that sits in a garage for two weeks will often come back to a flat battery. In the UAE, an AGM battery typically lasts 24–36 months, not the five years quoted in Europe. Low voltage then produces a screen full of unrelated warning lights — suspension, ABS, gearbox — that all clear once the battery is replaced. The correct approach is testing voltage and doing a parasitic draw test before replacing any module. Prevention is a smart battery maintainer on any car that is not driven weekly. 10. Infotainment, Sat-Nav and Module Communication Faults
Older cars use Volvo-derived head units, DB11-onwards cars use a Mercedes-based system, and both age badly in heat — screens delaminate, Bluetooth modules drop out, reversing cameras go black and the sat-nav freezes. Many of these are software or connector faults rather than dead hardware, but they are only diagnosed properly with manufacturer-level scan tooling that reads every module, not a generic OBD reader that only sees the engine. The right fix is a full network scan, checking for communication faults across the bus before any part is ordered. Prevention is largely voltage discipline again — most module faults on these cars trace back to a weak battery or a poor earth.
11. Adaptive Damper and DBX Air Suspension Problems
The DB11 and Vantage use adaptive dampers, and the DBX runs air suspension with adaptive damping. Common faults are a damper leaking oil, a suspension warning light, a car sitting low overnight, or a harsh ride locked in one mode. On the DBX, air spring bellows suffer here because fine sand works into the rolling lobe and abrades the rubber, and the compressor then runs longer to compensate until it overheats and cuts out. Correct diagnosis means checking live corner heights and pressures and doing a static hold test before condemning parts. Prevention is under-body washing and replacing bellows in pairs. 12. Brake Wear, Judder and Carbon-Ceramic Costs
Heavy, fast cars in city traffic go through brakes. Standard iron discs develop judder from uneven pad deposition — usually felt through the steering under braking — and pads wear far quicker than owners expect. Carbon-ceramic discs on the DBS, V12 Vantage and higher DBX models last much longer but must be inspected properly, because they fail on mass loss and edge chipping rather than thickness alone, and they must never be fitted with standard iron-disc pads. Brake fluid also absorbs moisture quickly in humid coastal air, so a two-year fluid change is not optional. Discs should always be measured against the minimum thickness stamped on them. 13. Air Conditioning Failure
AC is the hardest-worked system on any car in Dubai. Typical Aston Martin faults are a compressor that has worn or seized, a condenser damaged by stones and blocked with sand at the front of the stack, a leaking evaporator or expansion valve, and blend door actuators that leave one side cold and the other warm. A regas alone is never a repair — refrigerant does not get consumed, so if the level is low there is a leak. Proper work means leak detection, evacuating to a deep vacuum, and charging by weight, not by pressure. 14. Fuel Pump and High-Pressure Fuel System Faults
V12 models run twin in-tank fuel pumps, and cars that are regularly run low on fuel wear them out early because the fuel itself cools and lubricates the pump. Direct-injection models add a mechanical high-pressure pump driven off the camshaft, and a worn cam follower or pump can cause long cranking, rough running under load and rail-pressure fault codes. Symptoms are often blamed on the gearbox or ignition first. Correct diagnosis is measuring both low-side and high-side rail pressure live rather than swapping parts. Prevention is keeping at least a quarter tank, changing the fuel filter where the model has a serviceable one, and not leaving a car standing with old fuel for months.
15. Driveline Clunk From Torque Tube and Transaxle Mounts
The DB9, DBS, Vantage, Rapide and Vanquish use a rear transaxle with a torque tube connecting engine and gearbox. Inside that tube is a carrier bearing, and around it are engine, gearbox and differential mounts that all soften with age and heat. The result is a clunk on gear engagement, a shunt when lifting off and back on the throttle, and a vibration at a specific speed. Owners usually assume the gearbox is failing when it is a mount or a bearing. The fix is inspecting the mounts under load and replacing the carrier bearing if there is play. Prevention is replacing mounts as a set once one has collapsed, rather than one at a time.
How to Keep an Aston Martin Out of the Workshop
Most of the faults above share three causes: heat, standing still, and deferred fluid changes. Cars driven weekly, kept on a battery maintainer, serviced on a UAE-adjusted interval rather than the factory European one, and washed underneath after any dusty drive will avoid the majority of this list. The other half of the equation is the workshop: bonded aluminium bodies, carbon-ceramic brakes, transaxle driveline and manufacturer-level module coding all need equipment and experience that a general garage does not carry — including body and paint work on aluminium and carbon panels.
