Major Car Service vs. Minor Service: What’s the Difference?

Major Car Service vs. Minor Service

Every car needs regular servicing, but not every service is the same job. Most workshops and manufacturers split routine maintenance into two levels: a minor car service and a major car service. The difference is not just price. It is how deep the work goes, how many parts are replaced, and which systems are checked against the manufacturer’s schedule.

Knowing the difference between a major and minor service helps you avoid paying for work your car doesn’t need. More importantly, it helps you avoid skipping work it does need. This guide explains what each service includes, why problems develop when services are missed, how those problems are fixed, and how to set a service routine for driving conditions in Dubai. For the wider picture of car care, see our ultimate guide to car maintenance.

What Is a Minor Car Service?

A minor service is the routine, interval-based maintenance that keeps the engine lubricated and catches early wear. In UAE conditions it is usually due every 7,500 to 10,000 km or every six to twelve months, whichever comes first.

A typical minor service includes:

  • Engine oil and oil filter replacement to the correct manufacturer specification
  • Top-up of coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid and washer fluid
  • Visual check of brake pads, discs and brake lines
  • Tyre pressure, tread depth and condition check
  • Battery voltage and terminal check
  • Inspection of belts, hoses and visible leaks
  • Lights, wipers and basic electrical checks
  • Service indicator reset

The core of a minor service is the oil change service. Engine oil does three jobs at once:

  • It lubricates the moving parts.
  • It carries heat away from the bearings and turbocharger.
  • It holds combustion contaminants in suspension so they don’t settle inside the engine.

Once its additives are used up, the oil stops doing all three properly, even if it still looks clean on the dipstick. We explain this in more detail in 5 simple reasons why you need to change your car’s oil regularly.

For a real example of what a minor service looks like on a luxury vehicle, see our Mercedes G63 minor service in Dubai and the Bentley Bentayga minor service and inspection carried out at our workshop.

What Is a Major Car Service?

A major service includes everything in a minor service, plus the replacement of wear parts and fluids that have longer intervals. It is generally due every 30,000 to 60,000 km, or every two years, depending on the make and engine.

A typical major service adds:

  • Engine air filter and cabin (AC) filter replacement
  • Spark plug replacement on petrol engines
  • Brake fluid flush
  • Coolant replacement where the schedule calls for it
  • Fuel filter replacement on engines that have a serviceable one
  • Automatic gearbox, transfer case or differential fluid service where specified
  • Drive belt inspection or replacement
  • Detailed inspection of suspension, steering and exhaust
  • Full diagnostic scan of all control modules, not just the engine

Many luxury brands use their own names for these levels:

  • Mercedes-Benz splits maintenance into Service A and Service B. Service B adds the cabin filter, brake fluid and deeper inspections.
  • BMW uses Condition Based Service, where the car tracks each item separately.
  • Porsche refers to minor and major (intermediate) services.

The principle is the same across all of them: a light service at regular intervals, and a heavier one that replaces long-life parts. You can see the full scope of a major service in our Audi A8L major service, Audi S6 major service and Ferrari F430 Scuderia engine and major service write-ups.

Key Differences Between a Major and Minor Car Service

The simplest way to understand the difference is this: a minor service maintains, while a major service renews.

A minor service keeps the oil fresh and checks the car. A major service replaces the parts that slowly lose their effectiveness over time, even when they look fine:

  • Filters that clog
  • Spark plugs that erode
  • Fluids that absorb moisture or lose their protective additives

Time on the lift is also different. A minor service usually takes one to two hours. A major service can take most of a day, especially on V8 and V12 engines, where the spark plugs sit under intake manifolds or coil packs and part of the engine has to be disassembled to reach them. The Lamborghini Urus engine oil change service is a good example of how much more involved even routine work is on high-performance engines.

Why Service-Related Problems Occur

Most expensive repairs we see in the workshop don’t start as mechanical failures. They start as missed or incomplete services. These are the most common reasons.

Engine Oil Breaks Down Faster in Dubai Heat

Three conditions push oil temperatures up in Dubai: high ambient heat, long idling in traffic, and turbocharged engines. Heat breaks down the viscosity modifiers in the oil and speeds up oxidation. Degraded oil leaves sludge and varnish inside the engine, which blocks oil passages and starves the timing chain tensioners of oil pressure. This is one reason timing chain stretch is common on engines that have run extended oil change intervals.

Our article on how Dubai heat damages car engines covers this in depth. If the engine is already making noises, our car engine repair team usually traces it back to the oil history first.

Sand and Dust Clog Filters

Fine desert sand loads air filters much faster than a manufacturer’s European schedule assumes:

  • A restricted air filter makes the engine work harder and raises fuel consumption. Our guide on how to reduce fuel consumption in cars explains why.
  • A clogged cabin filter reduces airflow across the evaporator and makes the AC feel weak.

Many complaints that reach our car AC repair department turn out to be a blocked cabin filter or a condenser packed with dust, not a refrigerant fault. See how to fix a broken car AC for the full diagnosis process.

Brake Fluid Absorbs Moisture

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs water from the air over time. As the water content rises, the boiling point drops. Under hard braking, especially on heavy SUVs, the fluid can boil and the pedal goes soft. This is why a brake fluid flush every two years is part of a major service, regardless of mileage.

Worn pads and discs are handled by our car brake repair services. For more detail on spotting brake wear, read:

Coolant Loses Its Corrosion Protection

Coolant contains inhibitors that protect aluminium parts, water pumps and radiators from corrosion. These inhibitors run out with age, not just mileage. Old coolant leads to water pump seal failure, blocked radiator cores and overheating.

If you are already topping up coolant regularly, these guides will help:

On Mercedes models, the dashboard often warns you first. See why the Mercedes coolant warning light flashes.

Worn Spark Plugs Damage Ignition Coils

As spark plug electrodes wear, the gap between them widens, so the coil has to produce a higher voltage to fire the plug. This overloads the ignition coils and causes misfires, rough idle and a check engine light. Leaving plugs in too long often turns a simple plug change into a plug-and-coil job.

These articles explain how misfire codes are read:

Gearbox Fluid Is Treated as “Lifetime”

Many automatic gearboxes are sold as sealed for life. In hot climates, that lifetime is much shorter. Degraded transmission fluid causes harsh shifts, shudder and slipping clutch packs. A timely fluid service is far cheaper than gearbox repair.

For examples, see:

Worn Suspension and Mounts Go Unnoticed

A proper major service puts the car on a lift and checks the bushes, ball joints, shock absorbers and engine mounts. When this inspection is skipped, small wear turns into knocks, uneven tyre wear and vibration. Our guides on common signs your car needs new suspension parts, why early suspension inspection saves money and signs your motor mounts need replacement explain what to look for. Repairs are handled by our car suspension repair team.

How Missed Service Problems Are Fixed

The fix depends on how long the car has gone without proper servicing.

Slightly overdue: A full major service usually brings the car back to the correct baseline. Fresh oil, new filters, new plugs and new fluids restore normal performance.

Well past its intervals: The workshop should run a full diagnostic scan and inspection before servicing. The approach is explained in our engine diagnostics guide. Depending on what the scan and inspection find:

  • Sludged engines may need an oil system flush, followed by several short oil change intervals to clean out the deposits gradually.
  • Misfiring engines may need new ignition coils as well as spark plugs.
  • Gearboxes with burnt fluid should have the fluid changed carefully and the adaptations reset, because a sudden full flush on a neglected unit can cause problems of its own.

Used cars with an unknown history: Start with a car inspection and a UAE VIN check. Then carry out a major service so every interval starts fresh from a known point. Our BMW pre-purchase inspection checklist shows the level of detail this inspection should cover.

How Often Should You Service Your Car in Dubai?

Most manufacturers publish two schedules: normal and severe. Driving in the UAE fits the severe schedule almost every time, because of high temperatures, dust, short trips, stop-start traffic and long periods of idling with the AC running.

As a general rule for Dubai driving:

  • Minor service: every 7,500–10,000 km or six to twelve months
  • Major service: every 30,000–40,000 km or two years
  • Brake fluid: every two years
  • Cabin and air filters: check at every minor service, replace when dirty
  • Battery: test at every service, as heat shortens battery life to around two to three years

For brand-by-brand intervals, read our luxury car maintenance schedules in the UAE and how often should you service your car.

Cars that sit unused for long periods still need servicing by time, not mileage. Oil, brake fluid and coolant age even when the car is parked. Batteries also drain on stored cars, which is a common cause of the problems covered in my car won’t start and Lamborghini battery replacement in Dubai.

How to Prevent Service-Related Car Problems

  • Follow both intervals. Service by time as well as by mileage.
  • Use the exact oil specification for your engine. The right viscosity grade alone is not enough.
  • Keep a written or digital service record. It protects resale value and makes diagnosis easier.
  • Have tyres checked at every service. Heat and road surfaces wear them quickly. Our auto tyre services cover pressure, balancing and alignment.
  • Don’t ignore small warning signs. A light knock over bumps, a soft brake pedal or a weak AC are all worth checking early.
  • Book a full service before your RTA test. It helps the car pass the RTA vehicle inspection the first time.
  • Use one trusted workshop. Our guides on how to find the best car mechanic in Dubai and tips for maintaining your luxury car in the UAE explain why consistent service history matters.
